10 of the Most Iconic Legendary Creatures in Magic: The Gathering History

I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994 and have won a few draft tournaments in MTGO and MTG Arena.

1. Baron Sengir

Baron Sengir is a black creature that costs five colorless and three black mana.

He has five power and five toughness.

Whenever a creature dealt damage by Baron Sengir this turn dies, put a plus two power and plus two counter on Baron Sengir.

Tap Baron Sengir: Regenerate another target Vampire.

Baron Sengir was one of the chase cards of the Homelands expansion.

He was a despot who ruled Ulgrotha with an iron fist. He took one of the dwarven castles as his own and adopted their princess, Irini, as his own. He also adopted the former planeswalker Ravi as his adopted grandmother.

Sengir's magical powers and immortality made defeating him a near-impossible task.

2. Autumn Willow

Autumn Willow is a green creature that costs four colorless and two green mana.

She has four power and four toughness.

Pay one green mana: Until end of turn, Autumn Willow can be the target of spells and abilities controlled by the target player as though it didn’t have shroud.

Autumn Willow was the embodiment of the power of the forest. She is Ulgrotha's version of Gaea. She used her power to bring peace among the different factions.

Autumn Willow is hard to get rid of as she has a decent power and toughness and cannot be targeted by spells and effects. She can be used in conjunction with Armageddon to finish off your opponent.

3. Ihsan's Shade

Ihsan's Shade is a black creature that costs three colorless and three black mana.

He has five power and five toughness.

Protection from white.

Ihsan was once a Serra Paladin who tried to vanquish Baron Sengir. He figured out that he can harness the dark power of the baron and beat the baron at his own game. Instead of turning Ihsan into a vampire, Baron Sengir turned him into a ghost and made him subservient to his will.

During the early days of Magic, Ihsan was hard to get rid of. He was immune to black removal spells such as Terror or Dark Banishing. He was also immune to white remove spells such Swords to Plowshares and Pacifism. He can be taken out by red, but it would take two Lightning Bolts or Incinerates to take him down.

4. Sliver Queen

Sliver Queen is a white, blue, black, red, and green creature that costs one white, one blue, one black, one red, and one green mana.

She has seven power and seven toughness.

Pay two colorless mana: Create a one power and one toughness colorless Sliver creature token.

Sliver Queen is the hivemind that controls the slivers in Rath. Think of the Overmind controlling the Zerg. She was manipulated by Volrath into becoming one of his minions. She guarded the Legacy pieces and was convinced by Karn to hand over the pieces as Karn and the Legacy pieces were one.

Sliver Queen is not only a nice beefy creature in her own right, but she can also generate an endless number of slivers that absorb the abilities of slivers already in play.

5. Akroma, Angel of Wrath

Akroma, Angel of Wrath is a white creature that costs five colorless and three white mana.

She has six power and six toughness.

Flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste, protection from black and from red.

Akroma was conceived from Ixidor's intense love for his beloved Nivea. His feelings manifested itself in the form of Akroma.

Akroma is an extremely tough creature to deal with because of all her abilities. She is also hard to get rid of as she is immune to two colors that have the best removal—black and red. While Akroma's mana cost is daunting, you can always find ways to cheat her into play.

6. Phage the Untouchable

Phage the Untouchable is a black creature that costs three colorless and four white mana.

She has four power and four toughness.

When Phage the Untouchable enters the battlefield, if you didn’t cast it from your hand, you lose the game.

Whenever Phage deals combat damage to a creature, destroy that creature. It can’t be regenerated.

Whenever Phage deals combat damage to a player, that player loses the game.

Phage was originally Kamahl's sister Jeska. Kamahl was tainted by the influence of the Mirari and went berserk. He ended up killing his kin and almost killed Jeska.

Jeska was later captured by the Cabal Patriarch and was turned into Phage. Phage was cursed and killed anything she touched. She was later killed by Kamahl using the Soul Reaper. Instead of ending her, though, she melded with Akroma and Zagorka and became the false god Karona.

Phage is extremely powerful despite the insane casting cost as one touch from her wins you the game easily.

7. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is a colorless creature that costs 15 colorless mana.

She has 15 power and 15 toughness.

This spell can’t be countered.

When you cast this spell, take an extra turn after this one.

Flying, protection from colored spells, annihilator six

When Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles their graveyard into their library.

Emrakul is the Titan of Corruption and is part of the Eldrazi. The Eldrazi terrorized the plane of Zendikar and tried to bring their evil influence to other planes. She can corrupt living beings and turn them into tentacled monstrosities.

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn can be cheated into play using Aetherworks Marvel and can quickly win you the game because of its multitude of insane abilities.

8. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is a blue creature that costs one colorless and one blue mana.

He has zero power and two toughness.

Tap Jace, Vryn's Prodigy: Draw a card, then discard a card. If there are five or more cards in your graveyard, exile Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy, then return him to the battlefield transformed under his owner’s control.

Jace, Telepath Unbound is the transformed version of Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and is a blue planeswalker.

The first ability protects Jace as up to one target creature gets minus two power and minus zero toughness until your next turn. It gains you one loyalty counter.

The second ability lets you cast target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard this turn. If that spell would be put into your graveyard this turn, exile it instead. It loses you three loyalty counters.

The third ability gives you an emblem with “Whenever you cast a spell, target opponent mills five cards.” It loses you nine loyalty counters.

Jace exhibited telepathic powers at a young age, so his parents sent him off to Alhammarret to hone his gifts. Alhammarret was a sphinx who had strong telepathic powers, and he used his powers and Jace in order to enrich himself by keeping the Ampryn and the Trovians in perpetual war. Jace would rebel against his master and eventually wipe his mind away.

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy is a powerful card as it provides you looting effects initially and then the ability to use those spells you discarded later on. He can also protect itself from small creatures and end the game with milling effects.

9. Geist of Saint Traft

Geist of Saint Traft is a white and blue creature that costs one colorless, one white, and one blue mana.

He has two power and two toughness.

Whenever Geist of Saint Traft attacks, create a four power and four toughness white Angel creature token with flying that’s tapped and attacking. Exile that token at end of combat.

Traft was a demonslayer who protected his people against evil creatures. Ironically, he met his end with the demon Withengar.

Traft would be declared a saint, and he and his guardian angel would continue vanquishing evil even from death.

Geist of Saint Traft is an easy six damage in the proper environment and is a tournament staple as he is hard to target and deals more damage than what you paid for.

10. Griselbrand

Griselbrand is a black creature that costs four colorless and four black mana.

She has seven power and seven toughness.

Flying, lifelink.

Pay seven life: Draw seven cards.

Griselbrand is one of the demonic overlords who Liliana Vess served. Liliana Vess hoped to regain her freedom by destroying her demonic masters. She would eventually succeed in vanquishing him by using the Chain Veil.

Griselbrand is an extremely powerful creature as he can always refill your hand. He can also gain you a lot of life and deal plenty of damage to your opponent.
