Magic: The Gathering: The Best Commons of Ravnica: City of Guilds

I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994 and have won a few draft tournaments in MTGO and MTG Arena.

Ravnica has some quality commons that have mechanics such as Convoke, Transmute, and Dredge. These mechanics enhance your arsenal and give you more gameplay options.

Last Gasp

Last Gasp is a black instant that cost one colorless and one black mana.

It gives a target creature negative three power and negative three toughness.

This spell is very effective against indestructible creatures as they are resistant to most removal spells.

It can also be used as a combat trick to take down bigger creatures when they block or get blocked by your smaller creatures.

Stinkweed Imp

Stinkweed Imp is a black creature that costs two colorless and one black mana to play. It has flying and destroys any creature it deals combat damage to.

It also has the "dredge" ability which allows you to mill 5 cards and skip a card draw to put Stinkweed Imp back into your hand from your graveyard.

Stinkweed can be combined with effects that force you to block it such as Lure in order to wipeout your opponent's creatures in one fell swoop.

Compulsive Research

Compulsive Research is a blue sorcery that costs two colorless and one blue mana.

It allows you to draw three cards and you discard two cards unless you discard a land card.

This card essentially has the "looting" effect which is the "draw a card and discard a card effect."

This card can be used to fuel your graveyard with cards you can resurrect later on or with cards that will help out your existing cards in play such as discarding instants and sorceries to help Ral, Izzet Viceroy.

Drift of Phantasms

Drift of Phantasms is a blue creature that costs two colorless and one blue mana.

It has zero power and five toughness and has flying.

It also has a transmute cost of one colorless mana and two blue mana which lets you tutor / search for the card that has a converted mana cost of three.

This card provides tremendous flexibility. It can be a creature when needed that enables you to stave off attacking creatures. It can also be a tutor that fetches you a much needed combo piece or spell.

Muddle the Mixture

Muddle the Mixture is a blue instant that costs two blue mana and counters a target instant or sorcery spell.

It also has a transmute cost of one colorless and two blue mana. This lets you tutor / search for the card that has a converted mana cost of two.

This card provides tremendous flexibility. It can be a counterspell when needed that enables you to stave off your opponent's instants or sorceries. It can also be a tutor that fetches you a much needed combo piece or spell.

Civic Wayfinder

Civic Wayfinder is a green creature that costs two colorless and one green mana.

It has two power and two toughness and allows you to fetch a basic land and place it on your hand.

This card is an excellent inclusion in tribal decks as it has three creature types - elf, warrior and druid.

It also allows you to quickly ramp up your deck to summon larger creatures and makes your deck more consistent.

Elves of the Deep Shadow

Elves of the Deep Shadow is a green creature that costs one green mana.

It is a creature that has one power and one toughness and generates one black mana. It deals one damage to the controller as a drawback.

This card is excellent in Golgari decks as it is an excellent mana fixer. It makes your deck more consistent as far as mana is concerned.

Farseek

Farseek is a green sorcery that costs one colorless and one green mana.

It enables you to tutor / search for a Plains, Island, Swamp or Mountain card.

The beauty of this card is it allows you to fetch non-basic lands such as Dual Lands or Shock Lands.

Scatter the Seeds

Scatter the Seeds is a green instant that costs three colorless mana and two green mana.

It has an alternate cost which is the convoke cost. You can choose to tap a creature to reduce the spell's cost by 1 colorless mana or by one mana of the creature's color.

Scatter the seeds can easily fuel your Selesnya token deck and could produce up to six tokens with Doubling Season.

Seismic Spike

Seismic Spike is a red sorcery that costs two colorless and two red mana.

It destroys a target land and generates two red mana.

You can use the mana to cast another spell. You can maybe chain in another land destruction spell such as Stone Rain to further your mana advantage.

Faith's Fetters

Faith's Fetters is a white enchantment that costs three colorless mana and one white mana.

When it comes into play, the controller gains four life.

The enchanted permanent's activated abilities cannot be activated unless they are mana abilities.

If the enchanted permanent is a creature, it cannot attack or block.

This is an excellent removal card as it shuts down permanents and gives you four life to boot.

Boros Signet

Boros Signet is an artifact that costs two colorless to cast.

You pay one mana and tap Boros Signet to produce one red and one white mana.

This card is more like a mana filtering artifact and cannot produce mana without payment.

This is excellent for helping to ensure you would not get mana deprived of red or white mana.

Selesnya Signet

This card is excellent in aggro decks as it has haste and evasion.

Seeds of Strength

Seeds of Strength is a green and white instant that costs one green and one white mana and gives three targets a plus one in power and plus one in toughness.

You can choose the same or different targets. This is essentially a divisible Giant Growth.

Shambling Shell

Shambling Shell is a black and green creature that costs one colorless, one black and one green mana.

It has three power and one toughness and could be sacrificed to give a plus one power and plus one toughness counter on a target creature.

It also has the "dredge" ability which allows you to mill 3 cards and skip a card draw to put Shambling Shell back into your hand from your graveyard.

Dredge not only brings back Shambling Shell but also fills up your graveyard with cards you can resurrect.

Consult the Necrosages

Consult the Necrosages is a blue and black sorcery that costs one colorless, one blue and one black mana.

It lets you choose among two options. Either have a target player draw two cards or target player discard two cards.

This is an extremely versatile card as it lets you choose to disrupt your opponent's hand or add more cards to your hand.
