Magic: The Gathering: The Best Rares of Ravnica: City of Guilds

I have been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1994 and have won a few draft tournaments in MTGO and MTG Arena.

Ravnica has some quality rares that have mechanics such as Convoke, Transmute, and Dredge. These mechanics enhance your arsenal and give you more gameplay options.

Dark Confidant

Dark Confidant is a black creature that costs one colorless and one black mana.

It has two power and one toughness.

During the beginning of your upkeep, reveal the top card of your library and put it in your hand. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost.

This card has been a tournament staple as it provides tremendous card advantage to the card's controller and two damage to the opponent to boot.

Hunted Horror

Hunted Horror is a black creature that costs two black mana.

It has seven power and seven toughness. It also has trample.

The drawback is that you give your opponent two green Centaur tokens with three power and three toughness.

Black has plenty of cards that can get rid of these tokens, such as Mutilate or Yahenni's Expertise.

Copy Enchantment

Copy Enchantment is a blue enchantment that costs two colorless and one blue mana.

It comes into play as a copy of target enchantment that is already in play.

Blue has many quality enchantments such as Control Magic or Annex, and copying them essentially provides up to eight copies of an enchantment you own.

Dream Leash

Dream Leash is a blue enchantment that costs three colorless and two blue mana.

It allows you to gain control of target permanent provided that it is tapped.

This is a cheaper version of Confiscate and costs one mana less but has the drawback of requiring that the target be tapped.

Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise is a green creature that costs one green mana.

It has zero power and one toughness.

It also has flying and can be tapped to produce mana of any color of your choice.

Birds of Paradise has been a staple since the very beginning of Magic and still holds up to this day.

Chord of Calling

Chord of Calling is a green instant that costs "X" and three green mana.

It searches your library for a creature card with converted mana cost of "X" or less and puts it into play.

It also has Convoke and lets you tap a creature to reduce the spell's cost by one colorless or by one mana of the creature's colors.

In a token deck or weenie deck, you can easily use your existing creatures and a small mana investment in order to get your larger creatures into play faster.

Doubling Season

Doubling Season is a green enchantment that costs four colorless and one green mana.

It doubles the number of counters or tokens you would get from a spell or effect.

This was popular with the Selesnya players on its debut.

When planeswalkers became a thing in Lorwyn, people soon realized that they could simply cast Doubling Season and keep dropping planeswalker ultimates like it was nothing.

Golgari Grave-Troll

Golgari Grave-Troll is a green creature that costs four colorless and one green mana.

It has zero power and zero toughness. However, it comes into play with a plus one power and plus one toughness counter for each creature card in your graveyard.

You can pay one colorless mana and remove a plus one power and plus one toughness counter in order to regenerate Golgari Grave-Troll.

It also has Dredge. You can also mill six cards and skip a card draw in order to put Golgari Grave-Troll back into your hand from your graveyard.

The troll is deceptively powerful and has been a tournament staple as it is hard to kill and when you finally manage to, it comes back stronger than ever.

Life from the Loam

Life from the Loam is a green sorcery that costs one colorless and one green mana.

It enables you to return up to three land cards from your graveyard into your hand.

It also has Dredge. You can also mill three cards and skip a card draw in order to put Life from the Loam back into your hand from your graveyard.

Life from the Loam, is self-sustaining as when it uses its "Dredge" ability, you get to fill your graveyard with more lands and other stuff you can "Dredge" as well.

Char

Char is an red instant that costs two colorless and one red mana.

It deals four manage to target creature or player and two damage to you.

Char is essentially the red version of the blue spell Psionic Blast which does the exact same thing albeit in blue.

Blazing Archon

Blazing Archon is a white creature that costs six colorless and three white mana.

It has five power and six toughness.

It also has flying.

Blazing Archon has a static ability that prevents creatures from attacking you.

It can be used as a finisher as your opponent cannot attack and your Blazing Archon can easily evade would be blockers.

Twilight Drover

Twilight Drover is a white creature that costs two colorless and one white mana.

It has one power and one toughness.

Whenever a creature token leaves play, place a plus one power and plus one toughness counter on Twilight Drover.

You can pay two colorless and one white mana to remove a plus one power and plus one toughness counter to put two one power and one toughness Spirit tokens with flying into play.

You can combine Twilight Drover with Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar in order to generate an infinite amount of tokens.

Firemane Angel

Firemane Angel is a red and white creature that costs three colorless, one red and two white mana.

It has four power and three toughness.

It also has flying and first strike.

At the beginning of your upkeep if Firemane Angel is in your graveyard or in play, you gain 1 life.

You can pay six colorless, two white and two red mana during your upkeep to bring back Firemane Angel from your graveyard into play.

Firemane Angel is perfect for the Boros deck as it deals damage to your opponent while also giving you life in the process. However, a better card in its slot would be Baneslayer Angel. Not only does it cost less mana, but it is also beefier at five power and five toughness.

Searing Meditation

Searing Meditation is a red and white enchantment that costs one colorless, one red and one white mana.

Whenever you gain life you can pay two colorless mana to deal two damage to target creature or player.

You can combine this with Firemane Angel or Fountain of Renewal to deal two damage every turn.

Glare of Subdual

Glare of Subdual is a green and white enchantment that costs two colorless, one green and one white mana.

You can tap an untapped creature you control to tap target creature or artifact.

This is powerful in a token themed deck as you can render your opponents attackers or blockers useless.

Loxodon Hierarch

Loxodon Hierarch is a green and white creature which costs two colorless, one green and one white mana.

It has four power and four toughness.

When it comes into play you gain four life.

You can pay one green and one white mana and sacrifice Loxodon Hierarch to regenerate each creature you control.

This card is useful against modern versions of Wrath of God like Day of Judgement as they do not prevent regeneration.

Privileged Position

Privileged Position is a green and white enchantment that costs two colorlerless and any combination of three green or white mana.

It grants hexproof to all other permanents you control.

If you had two Privileged Positions in play, all permanents now have hexproof including the two Privileged Positions. This renders all removal spells useless unless they are mass removal spells.

Tolsimir Wolfblood

Tolsimir Wolfblood is a green and white creature that costs four colorless and one green and one white mana.

It has three power and four toughness.

It grants plus one power and plus one toughness to all other green creatures you control.

It grants plus one power and plus one toughness to all other white creatures you control.

You can tap Tolsimir Wolfblood and create a Woja token into play. Woja is a green and white legendary creature with two power and two toughness.

Because of Tolsimir's boosting abilities, Woja is automatically a four power and four toughness creature. When Woja is exiled or goes into the graveyard, you can just create another.

Grave-Shell Scarab

Grave-Shell Scarab is a black and green creature that costs two colorless, one black and two green mana.

It has four power and four toughness.

You can sacrifice Grave-Shell Scarab and pay one colorless mana to draw a card.

It also has Dredge. You can also mill one card and skip a card draw in order to put Grave-Shell Scarab back into your hand from your graveyard.

Grave-Shell Scarab is hard to get rid of as it keeps resurrecting itself. The only way to get rid of it is via exiling it.

Savra, Queen of the Golgari

Savra, Queen of the Golgari is a black and green creature that costs two colorless, one black and one green mana.

It has two power and two toughness.

Whenever you sacrifice a black creature, you may pay two life to force your opponent to sacrifice a creature.

Whenever you sacrifice a green creature, you gain two life.

If you sacrifice a creature that is both black and green, you can take advantage of both effects.

Vulturous Zombie

Vulturous Zombie is a black and green creature that costs three colorless, one black and one green mana.

It is a three power and three toughness creature.

It also has flying and gets a bonus of a plus one power and one toughness counter whenever a card of your opponent's goes into the graveyard from anywhere.

Vulturous Zombie can easily grow quickly through the use of discard and removal effects.

Circu, Dimir Lobotomist

Circu, Dimir Lobotomist is a blue and black creature that costs two colorless, one blue and one black mana.

It has two power and three toughness.

Circu has several static abilities.

Whenever you play a blue spell, you exile the top card of target library.

Whenever you play a black spell, you exile the top card of target library.

Your opponent cannot play non-land cards with the same name as cards exiled by Circu, Dimir Lobotomist.

This is an excellent card to include in your control or mill deck as it not only helps mill down your opponent quicker, but also stifles your opponent's ability to play his cards.

Dimir Cutpurse

Dimir Cutpurse is a blue and black creature that costs one colorless, one blue and one black mana.

It has two power and two toughness.

Whenever Dimir Cutpurse deals combat damage to a player, that player discards a card and you draw a card.

This card is an excellent way to gain card advantage. Not only do you get a card drawm your opponent discards a card.

Dimir Doppelganger

Dimir Doppelganger is a blue and black creature that costs one colorless, one blue and one black mana.

It has zero power and two toughness.

You can pay one colorless, one blue and one black mana to remove any creature from any graveyard and Dimir Doppelganger becomes a copy of that creature and retains this ability.

This card is an excellent way to cheat creatures into play by copying a creature you discarded earlier in the game or a creature of your opponent's which you put into his graveyard.

Glimpse the Unthinkable

Glimpse the Unthinkable is a blue and black sorcery.

Choose target player and that player mills ten cards.

This is a bargain at a mere two mana. With four copies of this card, you can mill two thirds of your opponent's library.

Szadek, Lord of Secrets

Szadek, Lord of Secrets is a blue and black creature that costs three colorless two blue and two black mana.

It has five power and five toughness.

It has flying.

Whenever Szadek, Lord of Secrets would deal combat damage to a player, instead put that many plus one power and plus one toughness counters on Szadek, Lord of Secrets and mill that many cards.

If you protect Szadek, Lord of Secrets, you can quickly mill out your opponent. This is easy as blue has countermagic and black has removal.

Sacred Foundry

Sacred Foundry is a land that is both a Mountain and a Plains.

It can produce either red or white mana.

You can choose to pay two life or Sacred Foundry comes into play tapped.

Shock Lands are the modern version of the classic Dual Lands albeit with a two life or comes into play tapped penalty.

Temple Garden

Temple Garden is a land that is both a Forest and a Plains.

It can produce either green or white mana.

You can choose to pay two life or Temple Garden comes into play tapped.

Overgrown Tomb

It can produce either black or green mana.
