The Neo Destiny Set

Like many kids, I didn't even know how to play the TCG, I just enjoyed collecting and trading the cards. As an adult, I can better appreciate the strategic aspects of the game and still love to scour through cards to find the best of the best.

Recently, I stumbled upon the Neo Destiny expansion, which features both "Light" and "Dark" Pokemon, emphasizing how the creatures mirror the moralities of their Trainers. Click here to check out the best of the Light, or read on to discover the deadliest of the Dark!

Evolution Stages

Basic Pokemon can be played from your hand as you like.

Stage 1 Pokemon are evolutions that must be played on a corresponding Basic Pokemon.

Stage 2 Pokemon are further evolutions to be played on corresponding Stage 1 Pokemon.

Dark Omastar

6. Dark Omastar

Dark Pokemon are known for high offense and low HP, with Dark Omastar only carrying 70 for a Stage 2.

  • Prehistoric Water (1 energy) Has half a chance to basically devolve any of your opponent's Pokemon, shuffling its highest evolution into their deck. An interesting technique, and useful white your gathering energy for the next attack.
  • Dark Tentacle (2 energy) Constricts for 30 and prevents your opponent from evolving their Active Pokemon on their next turn.

Omastar proves Dark Pokemon are more than raw offense, and has a nice array of energy-efficient tricks to mess with your rival's evolutions.

5. Dark Porygon2

Dark Porygon2 has some unique qualities. Only 60 HP for a Stage 1, and like most Pokemon, it has a weakness (Fighting), but it also resists Psychic and has a low Retreat Cost.

  • Spatial Distortion (Poke-Power) Provides half a chance to recycle a discarded Stadium card each turn.
  • Curve Attack (3 energy) Slams a measly 20 damage (oddly low for a Dark Pokemon), but it has the nice effect to prevent all damage to Porygon2 the next turn.. if you land the 50/50 coin flip.

Porygon2 can slowly pile on damage while avoiding it itself, but really stands out for its Stadium resurrection.

Dark Crobat

4. Dark Crobat

70 HP disappoints for a Stage 2 Pokemon, but Dark Crobat compensates with other qualities. For example, it resists Fighting and can retreat for free!

  • Surprise Bite (Poke-Power) Bludgeons a foe of your choice for a free 20 damage.
  • Dark Drain (2 energy) Flips a coin for every Pokemon your opponent has in play; each Heads deals that Pokemon 10 damage, and heals Crobat by 10. This attack can really spread some hurt and rapidly heal Crobat if your opponent has a full Bench.

A resistance, healing, free retreat, and free damage make Dark Crobat a force to be reckoned with.

Dark Ursaring

3. Dark Ursaring

Dark Ursaring enters with a moderate 60 HP (not terrible for a Stage 1) as well as a resistance to Psychic. It can go in any deck since its attacks will accept any element of energy.

  • Provoke (1 energy) Look at your opponent's hand, and place any Basic or Baby Pokemon they have on the Bench, then they can do the same to you. You want full Benches; check out the next attack.
  • Battle Frenzy (2 energy) Flips a coin for each Pokemon in play (both yours and your opponent's). Every Heads snags 20 damage. Full Benches mean that you'll hastily rack up some massive pain for such a low price!

For his multi-deck synergy and energy-efficient combo, Ursaring defeated many a foe upon arrival.

Dark Tyranitar

2. Dark Tyranitar

Very few Dark Pokemon reach 90 HP like the Stage 2 Dark Tyranitar, who also enjoys a resistance to Electric. His weakness to Grass and sizable Retreat Cost hardly distract from his immense power.

  • Mountain Smasher (1 energy) Flips a coin for each Fighting energy on Tyranitar; every heads accumulates 20 damage and discards a card from the top of your opponent's deck (making a win by deck destruction very possible).
  • Fling Away (4 energy) Costs 4, but spreads its damage nicely. If your opponent has no Benched Pokemon, you'll deal an impressive 50 to their Active. If they do, you only hit for 30, but also slam a Benched foe for 30, bringing a total of 60!

Give Dark Tyranitar a try to utilize his HP, resistance, and varied attacks.

Dark Gengar

1. Dark Gengar

Reminiscent of Crobat, Dark Gengar only has 70 HP for a Stage 2 Pokemon. However, he has no weakness and a resistance to Fighting. Plus, just check out his abilities.

  • Deep Sleep (Poke-Power) Like most Powers, only works while Gengar doesn't have a status condition. However, this sort of helps, because you wouldn't want it active if Gengar fell asleep. Why? Well, it makes slumbering Pokemon have to flip two coins each turn, and if either is Tails, they don't wake up! This gives them only a 25% chance to awaken each turn.
  • Pull In (3 energy) Strikes for a moderate 30 damage, and has two great effects. First, you can (but don't have to) switch the Defending Pokemon with one on the Bench before dealing damage. Second, you put them to sleep, requiring no coin flip, and stacking perfectly with Deep Sleep.

In short, Dark Gengar frustrates opponents by negating their actions most turns with his devastating sleep combo, and can quickly eliminate weak Benched Pokemon by switching them in and out. He's by far my favorite of today's bunch, and not just for his cool art.

Hopefully today's list highlighted some awesome Pokemon and let old fans revisit classic cards. Just seeing "Dark" in front of a Pokemon's name helped gather attention to these cards, and with luck we'll see more in the future.

For now, feel free to vote for your favorite, and I'll see you at our next countdown!
