Union Monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Union cards equip other monsters to boost them in various ways. They often provide extra ATK/DEF and can sacrifice themselves to save the equipped monster from destruction. Some union cards only work with specific groups (often machine monsters), others are more versatile—which reign supreme? These are ten cards you need in your union Yu-Gi-Oh! deck!
10. Machina Peacekeeper
Peacekeeper is weak but adds any machine from deck to hand when destroyed from the field. He can also attach himself to a machine you control, which simply lets him sacrifice himself instead of it if it would be destroyed. If already equipped, you can also special summon him, useful if you need link or tribute fodder.
9. Machina Gearframe
Gearframe has solid ATK and tutors a different Machina monster when normal summoned. Like Gearframe, he can attach himself to another machine you control to give it a shield that will prevent it from destruction once, just watch out for banish and return-to-hand removals.
8. Frontline Base
This continuous spell simply lets you once per turn special summon a level four or lower union monster from your hand. While I wish it could trigger with higher levels, it's still one of the best ways to swarm, letting you quickly equip your unions for their effects.
7. Spirit of the Six Samurai
Spirit is weak and only works with his own archetype (the Six Samurai), but he provides a pretty nice boost, equipping himself to a fellow Samurai to give it 500 ATK and let you draw a card when it destroys a monster in battle. And if it would be destroyed, you can destroy your attached Spirit instead.
6. Torque Tune Gear
While his ATK and DEF are 0, Torque is a versatile monster thanks to being both a union and tuner. So you can either synchro summon with him, or attach him to any monster for a 500 ATK/DEF boost. They also become a tuner and can sacrifice Torque to ward off one death.
5. C-Crush Wyvern
Wyvern has solid stats and can equip himself to a light-attribute machine monster to make it unaffected by enemy traps and give it the usual single-use shield. If sent from field to graveyard, he can special summon a union monster from your hand, useful for casting his brethren…
4. A-Assault Core
Core has powerful 1900 ATK, so he makes a good low-level beatstick, but if you equip him to a light machine, they're unaffected by monster effects besides their own and are protected from one death. Plus, if Core is sent from the field to your graveyard, you get to add a different union monster from graveyard to hand.
3. B-Buster Drake
Rounding out the trio, Drake has respectable stats, and if he attaches to another light machine, they become unaffected by spells. So, combining all three parts onto a light machine effectively makes them immune to everything (besides battle destruction). Better yet, if Drake is destroyed from the field, you add any union from deck to hand, helping recover from your loss.
You can also banish the A, B, and C unions from your field/graveyard to contact fusion summon "ABC-Dragon Buster" from your extra deck, who has 3000 ATK and can instantly discard to destroy a card or recover his fusion materials.
2. Union Scramble
As fun as union cards are, they don't hold up to competitive standards on their own, but our next two cards support them with amazing boosts. Scramble special summons up to three light machines that are either normal or union monsters, which really preps you for a powerful union combination.
Plus, on a turn after it's sent to the graveyard, you can banish Scramble to add a light machine normal or union monster that is banished back to your hand.
1. Union Hangar
Limited in the OCG (but unlimited on the TCG), you know this field spell is powerful. When activated, you can add a light machine union monster from deck to hand, and once per turn, when a light machine union is normal or special summoned to your field, you can equip a different union from your deck to it. With two great tutoring effects, Hangar is a must for union builds.
Union-Like Monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh!
In addition to actual union cards, many non-union monsters have equip-like effects, like "Armory Arm," "Black Metal Dragon," and most of the Draguinity archetype. Vylons, Noble Knights, and Machinas also favor equipment upgrades, but for now, vote for your favorite union card and I'll see you at our next Yu-Gi-Oh! countdown!
