About Claudie Wells

On August 23, 2022, American Girl released Claudie Wells, the first new Historical doll introduced by the company since the 2020 launch of Courtney Moore. Excitingly, Claudie is the first doll whose story takes place during the 1920s in Harlem, New York. Now, there is a doll (two for the 1940s) representing every decade of the 20th century except for the 1990s.

It is also notable that Claudie is African American, adding some much-needed diversity to the Historical Character line. Fifteen out of the 23 Historical dolls produced by American Girl have been white. Claudie is only the fourth of these dolls to be Black. Additionally, only three out of these four dolls are currently being sold, as Cécile Rey was retired in 2014.

Claudie’s Books

Meet Claudie is currently the only Claudie book being sold by American Girl. However, as was typical of previous Historical dolls, we can expect more installments of this series to be published in the near future. The book describes what life was like for children growing up during the Harlem Renaissance, a time of great cultural development of African American artistry. Harlem, which is located in Manhattan, is recognized as the center of this movement.

During Meet Claudie, Claudie is impressed by all the amazing artists who live in her neighborhood. She aspires to be like them one day but has difficulty finding a special talent of her own. Other plot points of the book include the careers of Claudie’s parents (her father is a baker, and her mother’s a reporter) and the looming threat that her family will be evicted from their home.

Brit Bennett, the author of the Claudie series, is known for writing popular and critically acclaimed novels for adults, such as The Vanishing Half and The Mothers. I was delighted to see that she had written a special introduction for Meet Claudie in which she describes the impact American Girl dolls had on her as a child, particularly Addie Walker and her accompanying books. I think it’s wonderful that American Girl has chosen an author who understands just how big of an impact these dolls and their stories can have on children. I’m sure Claudie‘s books will inspire future writers, artists, and historians.

The Claudie doll, which costs $115, comes with a copy of Meet Claudie. A hardcover copy of the book can be purchased on its own for $16.99.

The Claudie Doll

The Claudie doll is very unique. The Claudie Mold was created just for the doll. This mold is similar in appearance to the Makena Mold and the Sonali Mold. It features round eyes that are slightly farther apart than on most other face molds, round cheeks, full lips, and a wide, button nose smaller than the one on the Addy Mold, though similar in shape. While Claudie Wells is currently the only doll with the Claudie Mold, it is possible that future dolls may be made with this face mold.

Furthermore, Claudie has dark skin and brown eyes. Her dark brown hair is shoulder length with tight pin curls and no sewn-in part. It comes styled in a half-up, half-down hairdo. Her feathered eyebrows are high and rounded. Claudie is also the first Historical Character doll to have painted-on eyelashes, which has a very pretty effect. In my opinion, she is one of the most beautiful dolls American Girl has ever created.

Meet Outfit and Accessories

Claudie’s Meet Outfit consists of a light green hair ribbon, a light green cardigan sweater, a knee-length light blue and white plaid dress with white buttons and a Peter Pan collar, knee-high white socks, black Mary Jane shoes, and cotton underwear. The Claudie doll comes wearing this outfit. It cannot be purchased separately.

Claudie’s Accessories include a light blue cloche hat with a light green ribbon and bow, an imitation Baby Ruth candy bar, a silver heart-shaped necklace with a cursive “C” engraved on the pendent, and a brown bag with a pocket at the front. There is also a faux leather journal with Claudie’s name on it, with her writing and sketches on some of the pages. The Accessories cost $36.

  • At $50, Claudie’s Glitzy Sequin Gown and Capelet is her most expensive outfit, and it's my personal favorite item from her collection. It consists of a short dress covered entirely in gold sequins, a capelet also covered in gold sequins with silver trim, a gold head piece, and gold sandals.
  • The Jazzy Flapper and Fur Coat Outfit is the final outfit in Claudie's initial collection, and it costs $48. It includes a sleeveless turquoise satin dress with lace accents, a matching hair bow, an off-white fur coat, and black shoes with straps.

These last three outfits can all be purchased together as the Harlem’s Fashion Row Claudie Bundle, which is $146.

Final Thoughts

Overall, as an American Girl doll collector, I’m very pleased with Claudie’s release. It’s clear that a lot of time and thought went into this doll and the other items in her collection. I’m definitely going to consider purchasing this Claudie Wells.
