Where Can You Buy Used American Girl Doll Merchandise?

Over the years, American Girl has retired dozens of dolls and hundreds of outfits, accessories, and other play items. The enthusiasm over the rerelease of the first six dolls in their original outfits is indicative of the great number of people who are still interested in items that have been retired for many years.

Almost all retired American Girl merchandise can be bought used online, including dolls that are no longer in production. Here is a list of the best websites where you can locate and purchase AG products secondhand:

  1. Facebook Marketplace
  2. eBay
  3. Etsy
  4. American Girl Consignment

1. Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a great place to buy inexpensive secondhand American Girl Doll merchandise. If you feel a product on this site is too expensive, you can message the seller and ask if you can buy the item for a reduced price. Just keep in mind that not every seller will be willing to negotiate with you. Do not get mad if they chose not to sell to you for your purposed offer.

Additionally, many sellers of AG products on Facebook Marketplace are parting with their entire American Girl collection. This means one seller will typically have many doll items up for sale at a time. Many of these sellers are willing to give you a discount if you buy multiple items from them.

The main benefit of using Facebook Marketplace is that it allows you to find local sellers of used products, meaning you won’t necessarily have to pay for shipping. With most purchases on this site, you will be expected to drive to the seller's location to retrieve the product. This allows you to make sure the product is in good condition before paying for it.

Please remember, there is always a risk in meeting up with strangers, especially if you are a young woman like myself. I would highly recommend you take a friend or family member with you to pick up your Facebook Marketplace purchases to ensure your safety.

If you are not comfortable going to retrieve your Facebook Marketplace finds in person, you can always ask the seller to ship the product to you. Most sellers will agree to mail your purchase as long as you are the one paying the shipping and handling fees.

2. eBay

eBay is one of the most popular places to buy used toys online. It’s a great site to use if you’re searching for a specific American Girl item. With Facebook Marketplace, you will likely have to sort through multiple listings before finding exactly what you want. With eBay, you can search for specific dolls, outfits, accessories, and play sets. Usually, at least one person on eBay will be selling the item you desire. Many of the sales made on eBay are made via auction.

Auctions on eBay make it easy to acquire high-demand products at a reasonable price. The seller will state a starting price for the item. This is the lowest amount that they are willing to sell the item for. They will also choose how long they want the product to be up for auction. Some auctions will take place over a week, while others will only last one day.

Potential buyers make bids for the item up for auction. These bids cannot be lower than the seller’s starting price. If you are interested in an auction, it is a good idea to keep track of other people’s bids and increase your own bid accordingly. At the end of the auction, the item is sold to the highest bidder.

3. Etsy

Most people do not think of Etsy as a place to buy used items. Most of the products for sale on this site are personally created by individual sellers. However, I have seen many retired American Girl dolls and clothes for sale on Etsy, though they usually do not come cheap.

Additionally, many Etsy users will sell replicas of retired American Girl products that they have made themselves. Many of these items will resemble the original merchandise so closely that nobody will notice that they aren’t “authentic” AG products. These replicas are also usually somewhat expensive, which is fair given the amount of time it takes the sellers to create them.

Handmade products almost always cost more than mass-produced ones. So, if you are on a tight budget, I would recommend only using Etsy to grow your doll collection if you cannot locate the retired items for sale anywhere else.

4. American Girl Consignment

Similar to eBay, the American Girl Consignment Shop is a wonderful option for shoppers who prefer to buy items at auction. This online-only shop sells used American Girl products for extremely low prices. They auction new items every month, including retired dolls and other merchandise that is no longer in production.

Since this American-Girl-specific store is not as popular as eBay or other online auctioning sites, there are fewer bidders for every auction, meaning it is easier to win an auction for a lower bid. The highest bids on some of the items up for auction are currently on $5! Although I do not know of many people who have bought from this store, American Girl Consignment does have a five-star rating on Facebook.
