Unboxing My Latest Godzilla Figure

I recently received a new Shin Godzilla figure that I had pre-ordered many months ago. Upon opening it, I was so happy and excited by its awesomeness that it inspired me to write this article.

Since I was a child, I've always loved Godzilla. Today, I am a serious fan and collector of Godzilla figures. I own several X Plus, S.H. Monster Arts, Marmit, and Bandai figures. I recently purchased the Omega Beast Shin Godzilla (Awakening Version). It is now the highlight of my Godzilla collection.

The Omega Beast Shin Godzilla

The Omega Beast Shin Godzilla (Awakening Version) figure is truly a work of art and a sculptured masterpiece. The details and paint are second to none. Shin's wrinkled body shimmers with sparkling color. Its menacing pose and fierce teeth are scary yet beautiful.

Its size is awesome and the figure is breathtaking—a must-have for any Godzilla fan. In my opinion, this is the best Shin Godzilla figure produced to date. It even blows the X-plus gigantic series Shin Godzilla out of the water. This sculpture truly captures the creature's anger and pain.

What Is Shin Godzilla?

Shin Godzilla is theorized to be an evolved prehistoric aquatic super-organism. Transformed by surrounding nuclear waste dumped into the sea by humans. In Japanese lore, he is considered to be God incarnate.

Is it Godzilla? Yes, it's just a different iteration of the character. Just as the other versions of Godzilla, this one is highly radioactive. It oozes and pulsates with radioactivity. The creature's skin sags and folds on top of each other with radioactive glowing purples and red. Its mouth split and deformed by evolution.

The mouth evolved that way in order to compensate for the atomic breath as a defense mechanism when he was attacked, its entire body pumping with boiling lava-like radioactive blood—even Shins small but creepy hands and arms pumping with radioactive blood. Shin truly is the most horrifying of Godzillas.

The movie titled Shin Gojira was first released on July 25, 2016, in Tokyo. According to producers, they chose the title due to its variety of meanings. In the Japanese language using different kanji characters that create the symbols for "shin" could convey a meaning of "true" or "god."

Godzilla Figures and Fun

Collecting Godzilla figures can be a lot of fun, addictive, and very expensive. If you're like me, you'll want all the Godzilla figures you can get your hands on. Unless you have endless amounts of money and space, you'll need to pick out the best figures.

So how do you know what figures to buy? What's worth spending your hard-earned dollars on? With so many companies and figures to choose from, it can truly be overwhelming when it comes to buying Godzilla figures.

Choosing the Right Manufacturers

Here are a few high-end companies that produce high-quality figures and sculpts:

  • S.H. Monster Arts
  • Marmit
  • Megahouse
  • EZHobi
  • Bandai

When buying Godzilla figures, typically, the better the sculpt, the more you'll pay for it.

When the figure is painted and sculpted correctly, the figure becomes more collectible. In my experience, almost every Godzilla figure increases in price once the figure is sold out unless it's a knockoff. It is not unusual to see figures double or triple in price.

My Favorite Godzilla Figure Lines

Here are a few Godzilla figure lines and manufacturers to look into if you're interested in starting a collection.

My personal favorite Godzilla figures are by SHONEN-RIC/X-PLUS. These figures never lack in detail and are usually movie-suit accurate. In other words, they look just like the actual costume worn in the movie, right down to the seams.

X-PLUS figures are amazingly detailed, sculpted, and painted. They usually range in price from $89 for smaller figures to several thousand for big figures, depending on "when" and "where" you purchase them. When buying X-PLUS Godzilla figures, you'll want to move quickly and secure your pre-orders. Figures usually sell out quickly, and once they do, they are hard to find at a good price.

Like the gigantic series by X-PLUS, these figures could be originally pre-ordered from around $400 to $1200. Now you can expect to find them for thousands of dollars on eBay. Amazing figures like the X-PLUS gigantic series Shin Godzilla are selling on eBay for over $2,500!

The Omega Beast Series by EZHobi

The Omega Beast Series by EZHobi are some of the most beautiful figures ever produced. They are known for using special paint and translucent materials to create a unique look found only in the Omega Beast Series. These figures are very rare, large, and expensive.

However, if you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend purchasing it. You can expect to pay around $1,300 for one of these figures. These figures also tend to skyrocket in price, so be sure to pre-order yours as soon as possible. Otherwise, obtaining one may be very hard and pricey.

S.H Monster Arts

S.H Monster Arts figures are also some of the best figures available on the market and are highly sought after by collectors. These figures have multiple points of articulation, which allows for a wide range of movement and possibilities.

The details, paint jobs, and sculpt are often top-notch when buying S.H Monster Arts figures. Pre-order prices usually range in the vicinity of $60 to $150, depending on where you buy them. However, once they sell out and hit eBay, prices could jump into the $400 range.

Bandai American and Bandai Spirits

Bandai figures are some of the best figures money can buy. They're relatively inexpensive, which makes them a great introduction for first-time collectors to start collecting. Prices range from around ten dollars on the low end all the way up to a few hundred dollars on the high end. However, there are plenty of excellent figures in the lower price range.

Playmate & MonsterVerse Figures

The MonsterVerse includes films featuring Godzilla and King Kong produced by Legendary Entertainment and co-produced by WB.

MonsterVerse figures are produced by many companies, including Walmart. Walmart has its own line of Godzilla MonsterVerse figures by playmate. Surprisingly, their figures are better than expected and are worth picking up. Prices at Walmart range from $10 to $30. Although once they sell out except to pay more.

Godzilla and Friends

The Godzilla universe consists of all types of monsters, from big to small to hairy and tall. Some are friends to Godzilla and some are foes, but all of these monsters have big personalities.

Some monsters like Baragon are small, cute, and harmless-looking, while others, like Biollante, are huge and fierce. There are even mechanical monsters, like Mecha-King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla. The world of Godzilla is truly an exciting one.

Hi Louise, I love hunting for good deals on figures. Weather they are rare old figures or new ones. Plus, there is almost nothing more exciting to me than Box Day. Box day is when a long-anticipated Godzilla figure is about to arrive. It is exciting and nerve-racking all at once. I'm excited to receive it, but also a little nervous about it being damaged during shipping. However, it's a great feeling opening a new figure and seeing it in mint condition. Although heartbreaking when it arrives damaged.

Louise Powles from Norfolk, England on August 20, 2021:

Wow, that's an amazing collection you have there. I love how many you have collected over the years.

Thank you, Shauna. Yeah, I'm lucky I have a wife that even allows it. Haha. In truth, My wife is also a fan of Godzilla figures. However, she collects the cute stuff. Like plush toys or the Chibi Monster series. I still have a ton of figures on pre-order. It's gonna be challenging to find space in the room for the new one. Lol.

Thank you very much for reading my article John. I've been a collector of Godzilla for year's. I first fell in love with Godzilla figures at 4yrs old, when my parents bought me my first Godzilla. It was the 1977 Shogun Godzilla by Mettel. I still have the figure in my collection today and it's in near-mint condition. I actually gave the figure to my son when he was 4 years old like me (so technically it my sons Godzilla now). He's is 18 now and is also a huge Godzilla buff too. He is like a Godzilla encyclopedia. Ha ha.

Wow! I'm blown away that you have an entire room dedicated to your collectibles. I think I'd get a little creeped out when walking into the room, but then again, I don't collect monsters.

Great article, Jason. Very impressive collection!

This was a very good write-up about your collection and Godzilla collecting in general, Jason. It sounds like it is a very popular collector niche. It isn't my thing but I have collected various other things over time so I can totally relate. Thank you for sharing.
