My House of Horrors

My House of Horrors

1. House of Horrors by I Can Fix Air-Conditioners

Up for a hair-raising horror thriller? If it isn't obvious, House of Horrors has your back—against the wall, that is. This is a top-recommended web novel for adrenaline-seekers and thriller junkies.

When Chen Ge’s parents suddenly went missing, they left him nothing except for a old horror house. Determined to keep the horror house, the last memento of his parents, he resigns from his job and takes over. But he’ll soon find out that his House of Horrors has more secrets than he could possibly imagine.

My Rating: I’ll rate this 10/10. House of Horrors is one of the best web novels in the psychological thriller niche. It's a rare U-turn from the common face-slapping young masters and I-am-gonna-be-immortal-so-imma-kick-your-ass story templates.

The plot is gripping, and the world-building has this modern supernatural detective vibe. The characters also have a rare depth and humanity. This novel is best read when the lights are out.

The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage

The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage

2. The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage by Qian Shan Cha Ke

Empress Shen Miao could only watch as her closest kin died one by one—her father, son, and daughter. But that wasn't enough; the emperor she loved abandoned her for another woman, even forcing her to take a cup of poison.

Thus, before she met her end, she swore vengeance to the heavens. But fate took pity on her, giving her another chance. She returned to the past, bringing forth her fury and incredible wit. Her goal? To tear all her betrayers apart.

My Rating: Hands-down, this is a 10/10. The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage is one of the best web novels in the historical romance niche. The main character isn’t taking bull: She’s smart, calculating, and not a dumbed-down Mary Sue. The plot progression will also keep you scrolling chapter after chapter. The characters aren’t cardboard characters and are multi-dimensional.

The Legendary Mechanic

The Legendary Mechanic

3. The Legendary Mechanic by Qi Peijia

Han Xiao wakes up on a laboratory table, tied like a specimen. Unfortunately, it isn’t a dream. He has transmigrated into the game he is playing last night—Galaxy. Years before the game even started.

Itching for some galactic high fantasy spiced up with action and comedy? Then Legendary Mechanic will keep you on the funny rope.

My Rating: The Legendary Mechanic is a solid 8/10, but it could have been better. The novel has one of the best starts out there. Fast-paced, thrilling, funny main characters, and throw a stunning world-building into the mix.

It suffered from power creep and I’m-the-MC-so-I-can-win-every-battle trope. Imagine a thousand-year-old enemy dumbing down to a kid’s level so the MC wins. But if you’re only looking for an enjoyable read without too much context, then this goodie packs the right punch.

Throne of Magical Arcana

Throne of Magical Arcana

4. Throne of Magical Arcana by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving

Xiao Feng finds himself transmigrated into a mysterious world. A mysterious world where faith and magic coincide. Now, he has to grapple hard with his newfound reality.

And soon enough, he cuts out a place for himself in the hidden world of magic. With the help of good old science, he’ll soon flip aged-old traditions and views. Pioneering a new frontier of magic called—Arcana.

My Rating: Throne of Magical Arcana deserves a 9/10. When magic, mystery, and science intertwine with stunning world-building skills. Boom. You’ll get this binge-worthy goodie. The characters? Charming and human. The thrilling plot progression will hook you from start to end. I dare say this is one of the best web novel I have ever read.

Stellar Transformation

Stellar Transformation

5. Stellar Transformation by I Eat Tomatoes

Talentless. Incapable of cultivating internal energy, Qin Yu bears the weight of his ineptitude. To not shame his family, he walks the chilling and painful path of external cultivation.

Still, the god of web novels has better plans for such a self-sacrificing lad. Cheats. And Qin Yu gets a badass one—a meteor from the sky.

My Rating: I’ll rate this 8/10. Stellar Transformation is among the earliest translated web novels in the community. Unlike most of the xianxia novels, this novel has a slower pace. Even so, it has great character arcs that’ll pull your heartstrings, a typical writing style from I Eat Tomatoes.

Swallowed Star

Swallowed Star

6. Swallowed Star by I Eat Tomatoes

Lou Feng is but a young man living in a post-apocalyptic world. An era where monsters mutate and treat humans as food. And governments are mere puppets to superhumans called war gods. And he is planning to become one.

But in a world where resources matter to succeed, poor Lou Feng’s dream to become a war god seems impossible. But unbeknown to him, inside his body lies a secret that’ll push him to a world of infinite possibilities.

My Rating: I’ll give Swallowed Star a 7/10. If you’re still new to the wuxia and xianxia novels, then this web novel will be a good start. The plot is good but generic. The prose is good enough for newbies. If you’re an avid reader and have read through great novels, I trust you’ll find this novel lacking and edgy.

Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator

Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator

7. Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator by Xue Shan Lan

After reading half-thru a shoujo web novel, Chu Lian can only lament the stupidity of the female lead. Despite having a handsome husband, she still cheats like a loonie.

In a twist of fate, she suddenly finds herself transmigrated in the female lead's body. And of course, she'll welcome her newfound hottie husband with wide open arms.

But wait? What's happening? Her husband is supposed to be a kind gentleman. But eh, he’s acting like some aloof, edgy bastard.

My Rating: I’ll rate Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator 9/10. This web novel won’t appeal much to adventure-seeking readers, but female readers will love it.

A mixture of cute romance and captivating storytelling. After all, it's a well-done slice-of-life web novel filled with cooking and business. Oh, don't forget the light dose of face-slapping and household management.

I Shall Seal The Heavens

I Shall Seal The Heavens

8. I Shall Seal The Heavens by Er Gen

Meng Hao dreams to become a proud scholar of the State of Zhao. Unfortunately, an unexpected kidnapping ended it all. Now he is but a sect disciple of the infamous Reliance Sect.

Join Meng Hao on his journey to scam the world and seal the heavens. An adventure that’ll lead him to the peak of cultivation. What makes him less generic? Well, he has a talking parrot and a meat slab (yeah a talking one too).

My Rating: Of course, this list won’t be complete without Er Gen's works. I Shall Seal The Heavens is among the first web novels to start the xianxia and wuxia craze. A classic cultivation fantasy deserving of 8/10.

The characters aren’t cardboard cut-outs. The plot flows well but may be too repetitive if you’ve already binged lots of web novels. It's also filled with cultivation tropes, but well-done ones. Ideal for new readers.

Lord Of Mysteries

Lord Of Mysteries

9. Lord of Mysteries by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving

When a string of fate transmigrates Zhou Mingrui as Klein Moretti, he can only shout in pain. After all, his head has a squirming bullet hole in it. And things are about to get rough. With mysteries and a mysterious organization tracking him, he must adapt fast.

Lord of Mysteries is Cuttlefish That Loves Diving's most iconic web novel yet. A well-crafted alternate Victorian world where gods, machines, hexes, and artifacts tangle together.

My Rating: I’ll rate this 10/10. Its setting is downright stunning. Even now, I still find its world captivating each time I reread it. The characters aren’t plain templates. No. Each one is a complicated individual with their own goals and weaknesses.

The plot might start slow, but you’ll find it perfect as the mysteries unravel one after another. My only regret is it ended quite unsatisfactory like the Game of Thrones series.

The King’s Avatar

The King’s Avatar

10. The King’s Avatar by Butterfly Blue

Ye Xiu isn’t just an ordinary pro gamer of Glory. He is the best example of a top-tier gamer everyone should emulate. Humble, skillful, and badass.

Even so, even those at the top can suffer from bad luck. Later, he finds himself kicked out of his team, and forced to leave the professional gaming world.

Thus, with no job and no money, he finds work in an Internet café. But when Glory releases its tenth server, he enters the game again. Not as a pro gamer, but just enjoy. And maybe, rule it again while he's at it.

My Rating: The King’s Avatar is a solid 9/10. It’s a rare web novel about the cutthroat e-sports world. Not virtual reality, but a classic keyboard and mouse RPG game. It is a well-written hero’s journey story archetype. The prose? Simple but lovely. No wonder most hardcore gamers (like me) who read this web novel liked it to the tee.

To Be A Virtuous Wife

To Be A Virtuous Wife

11. To Be a Virtuous Wife by Yue Xia Die Ying

In ancient China, what is a virtuous wife? One who can endure her husband's concubine. One who can tolerate irritating cousins. And a woman who can bear with even the most terrible of mothers-in-law.

But what if you transmigrate a modern woman into the ancient world? Will the definition of a virtuous woman shift? Qu Qing Ju will let you find out.

If you’re looking for a well-baked historical romance, then To Be a Virtuous Wife is a perfect start.

My Rating: I’ll give To Be a Virtuous Wife 10/10. First of all, this isn’t all about the classic face-slapping trope like most romance web novels out there

It has rich depth whilst letting the readers appreciate the intricacies of the ancient culture. Add a great plot and flowing prose and you’ll get one of the best web novels in the romance niche. And hey, it's complete too.

Release That Witch

Release That Witch

12. Release That Witch by Er Mu

Chen Yan is but a tired engineer working on his deadlines and mechanical blueprints. Too bad for the company he didn’t finish it before he died from overworking. Still, he soon finds himself transmigrated into a medieval world. Worse, in the body of Roland, an infamous and useless prince.

He has engineering knowledge. He is a prince. Of course, he’ll build a new kingdom no one in this medieval world has ever seen. Impossible? Come on now, he has lots of cute and powerful witches to serve as his heavy construction equipment.

My Rating: Release That Witch is well-done technology meets a medieval world trope. The world-building is breathtaking. Meanwhile, the plot and characters are engaging.

Honestly, I’m a junkie when it comes to this type of story. So I read this for guilty pleasure and damn I didn’t regret the binge. Here’s my thumbs up and a 9/10.

A Will Eternal

A Will Eternal

13. A Will Eternal by Er Gen

Bai Xiaochun is a menace. Scared of dying, he’ll do whatever it takes to survive in the ruthless cultivation world. Join his adventures as “Chicken Thief, “Plague Devil, Little Turtle, and “Aphrodisiac Demon.”

If you want some good laughs to chill out, then this web novel is the comedy gold you're searching for.

My Rating: One word. Hilarious. Er Gen’s A Will Eternal is one of the best web novels I’ve ever read. Bai Xiaochun’s mad antics will make you laugh throughout the read. I’ll give it a solid 9/10

Reverend Insanity

Reverend Insanity

14. Reverend Insanity by Gu Zhen Ren

Insane. This novel’s title has everything it needs for description. A cold-blooded main character filled with dark schemes. Morals be damned. Fang Yuan isn’t some lousy young master villain. He is selfish, ruthless, and bloody smart.

If you’re looking for a cultivation novel with a ‘real’ evil MC, then Reverend Insanity is the web novel for you.

My Rating: The pacing is smooth, but there are a few lapses that anyone can expect from a thousand-plus-chapter web novel. In the world of overused tropes and cliché, this web novel stands out. I’ll rate this 8/10.

Superstars of Tomorrow

Superstars of Tomorrow

15. Superstars of Tomorrow by Lazy Cliché

On one fateful day, Fang Hao, a war hero from 400 hundred years ago, wakes up and discovers he’s been transmigrated into the future. A world of unprecedented peace and prosperity he has always dreamed of.

With no more no wars to fight, no more deaths of loved ones, and no more beasts to subdue. He pursues what he has always dreamed of becoming in the past—a composer.

If you’re into slice-of-life web novels spiced with good humor, then this showbiz fantasy novel might just be the one for you.

My Rating: Superstar of Tomorrow deserves 8/10. Its premise isn’t unique but is well done. The sci-fi showbiz world is so interesting that I read everything before I knew it. The sci-fi world-building is a rarity in the world of web novels. My only issue is it ended without untangling lots of plot promises it foreshadowed.

Coiling Dragon

Coiling Dragon

16. Coiling Dragon by I Eat Tomatoes

Meet the great-grandma of English-translated web novels. The first ever translated online web novel I have read. And probably the first for those who witness the rise of web novels.

Linley Baruch is the scion of the Dragonblood Warriors. Still, destiny played the Baruch clan a bad card. Years pass and the once-legendary family is now no more than a decrepit and debt-ridden clan on the verge of financial ruin.

With nothing but a contracted pet rat and a ghost on his side, can Linley prevent his beloved family's collapse?

My Rating: I’ll rate Coiling Dragon 9/10. It deserves to be called the Dragon Ball Z of xianxia web novels. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it's not the best out there. But if you’re looking for a webnovel to start with, then this novel can be a good start. The plot revolves around the coming-of-age genre mixed with a good ol’ hero’s journey archetype.

Library Of Heaven’s Path

Library Of Heaven’s Path

17. Library of Heaven’s Path by Heng Sao Tian Ya

Transmigrated into another world, Zhang Xuan suddenly ends up as a noble teacher. Of course, he gets a cheat—a mysterious library full of powerful ancient arts from all professions.

Well, the title says it all.

My Rating: Library of Heaven’s Path fared great during its early arcs. Fresh and has a very interesting concept of grooming up disciples to become the best in the world. Still, it suffers from the tiring issue of power creep in the mid and later arcs. So much sometimes I have to turn off my brain cells. I’ll give it a 7/10.

Eight Treasures Trousseau

Eight Treasures Trousseau

18. Eight Treasures Trousseau by Yue Xia Die Ying

The marriage of the city’s most eligible bachelor, Xian Junwang, and the infamous daughter of Yi’an Marquis breaks out. The people can only shake their heads in disbelief. Cursing heaven for inserting manure into a fresh flower. Xian Junwang the flower while the Yi’an’s daughter, the manure.

But wait! There's transmigration somewhere. Guess who? Alright, we all know how this rolls.

My Rating: A rare 9/10 gem. Eight Treasures Trousseau is one of the best web novels to read in the historical romance niche. The essence of ancient eastern culture has been well-showed. I love that. It is also well-written—interesting characters, great pacing, and exciting foreshadowing,

Desolate Era

Desolate Era

19. Desolate Era by I Eat Tomatoes

Destiny has never been gentle with Ji Ning. He lives a terrible life suffering from incurable diseases. He is alive, but at the same time, he is not. Still, his firm desire to live a good life will drive him to pursue life like every day will be his last.

Before his death, he succeeds in the financial markets, earning a huge amount of money. Instead of using it for selfish gain, he contributes all his wealth to poor and sick children. A great karma that'll follow him to the underworld, and his next reincarnation.

My Rating: Desolate Era is a classic web novel worth 10/10. The character progression is so good it made me tear up a few times. From its use of Chinese myths to its plot, this is the best web novel I Eat Tomatoes has ever written yet. I might be biased, but yeah, this work stands out a lot.

Chronicle Of Primordial Wars

Chronicle Of Primordial Wars

20. Chronicle of Primordial Wars by Lazy Cliché

Only out for an on-site archaeological visit, Shao Xuan never thought it’ll spell his last day on Earth. He soon finds himself transmigrated into the body of an orphan boy. And probably, thousands of years back to the stone age era.

A savage era where survival of the fittest is the rule. A time where tribes reign across vast lands, and mysterious powers still exist. Can Shao Xuan cope in his newfound environment?

My Rating: I’ll rate this 9/10. Chronicle of Primordial Wars is an under-appreciated web novel. The plot is original and purely about adventure and less about romance. From plot progression and characters, this gem doesn’t lack as compared to the best web novels out there.

World Of Cultivation

World Of Cultivation

21. World of Cultivation by Fang Xiang

Zou Mo Ge isn’t just a normal Wu Kong Sword Sect disciple. He is famous, especially for his stinginess far worse than Ebenezer Scrooge. Tie it with his zombie-like face, he earns a befitting title—the Scalping Zombie.

But underneath his stiff exterior hides a stiffer interior. Zou Mo Ge isn’t kidding. He will kick ass for money. If you’ve read The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor, then this is Weed’s Chinese version.

My Rating: When I started reading the World of Cultivation, I wasn't even expecting anything. But, oh boy, Zou Mo knows how to break rules in one hell of a fun way. It also boasts rich world-building and lovable characters. Still, the sudden end left me hanging. This web novel is up there at the top. I’ll give this a solid 8/10.

Final Thoughts

The web novel industry has taken the world by surprise. As of late 2022, it is about to breach the billion-dollar market mark, making it a legit money machine. So it's no wonder that Webnovel, Naver, Kakao, Yen Press, and more big industry players are making moves.

Some web novels are even getting adaptations, like comics, games, and audiobooks. And following the trend, animations are just around the corner.

But what’s in it for us readers? This means lots of investments are flowing into the web novel scene. And we can expect more creative content in the future. Hey, everybody likes more goods coming, right?
