Hideyoshi Nagachika is the childhood best friend of the Tokyo Ghoul main protagonist, Ken Kaneki. Hideyoshi’s nickname is Hide. His debut was in the Tokyo Ghoul manga, chapter 1, and in the Tokyo Ghoul anime, episode 1.

Nagachika Hideyoshi written in kanji is 永近英良. Kanji meanings are: 永 – long time, 近 – close, 英 – hero, 良 – good.

Hide is one of the only characters whose profile says “No Data” [1]. He has no official stated birthday date, height, weight or blood type. Based on the fact that he is an important character, but has no data (while there are characters who appear in the manga for a brief moment and have more data), many fans believe that the author of the Tokyo Ghoul manga, Ishida Sui, keeps Hide's data secret for a reason.

Hide is very observant and has great analytical skills. Kaneki Ken himself was scared of Hide because of his deduction skills and Nishiki Nishio stated that Hide is “dangerous” (volume 4 - chapter 30 - page 13).

Hide has a habit of scratching his face when he is nervous or when he is lying [2].

His best friend, Kaneki Ken has a habit of his own, touching his chin with his left hand when he's hiding something.

Hide’s seiyuu is Toyonaga Toshiyuki (also known as a seiyuu of Ryuugamine Mikado from Durarara!! or Shiina Asahi from HighSpeed!: Free! Starting Days movie).

In TGhoul Radio Show 01, we get to know that Toshiyuki originally auditioned for the role of Kaneki [3]. Towards the end when there was three minutes left, he was surprised when the staff asked him to "act like you're suffering".

He didn't get the role, however the staff asked if he wanted to play Hide instead.

Kaneki is holding Hide on the official poster of the second anime season: Tokyo Ghoul √A.

The author of the poster was asked to draw Hide’s hand in a way that people wouldn't be able to tell if the hand belongs to a man or a woman.

This might also confirm that in the opening theme, Munō, for the second season, the hands taking off Kaneki’s mask could be Hide’s, based off to the scenes from the last episode of the second season.

In the official Tokyo Ghoul Daily Flip Calendar 2016, Hide appears on the days: April 1st (First day of school), May 5th (Children’s Day), May 16th (Traveling Day), August 11th (Mountain Day), October 4th (Searching for lost things Day) and December 12th (Battery Day) [4].

Tokyo Ghoul: Hibi (eng. Tokyo Ghoul: Days) is the first novel set in the Tokyo Ghoul universe. It tells the story about ghouls, humans, and their daily lives. This novel series has 6 chapters in total. In the first chapter (titled Bible) of the first volume of Tokyo Ghoul: Hibi, Hide is a viewpoint character.

Tokyo Ghoul: Hibi is about Hide meeting members of the college Occult Club, who believe that Kaneki Ken is a ghoul. Hide decides to protect Kaneki and covers for him [6].

In Tokyo Ghoul chapter 53, we can see that in Hide's room, he has a poster for Red Dragon, a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal movies (volume 6 - chapter 53 - page 18).

Red Dragon (1981), The Silence of the Lambs (1988), Hannibal (1999) and Hannibal Rising (2006) all feature the cannibalistic serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Fun fact: The Silence of the Lambs became the third film in Oscar history to win the following five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor.

Hide appears on the cover of the last DVD volume (volume 6) of Tokyo Ghoul √A, together with Kaneki Ken.

The sixth volume has an original mini soundtrack CD, a booklet and some chibi character goods. On disc extras include an audio commentary, a commercial spot, promo video, and some additional gallery artwork.

Hide is associated with the Tarot card number 1: the Magician.

In Tokyo Ghoul chapter 83, we can see the number 1 on his hat (volume 9 - chapter 83 - page 19). He also played the role of the witch's servant during the school play.

In the themed deck of cards Tokyo Ghoul Trump Hide is featured as the "Ace of Spades" [9].

Part of a theory:

The Ace of Spades is the highest and most powerful playing card in a deck of playing cards. That’s why, compared to the other Aces, the Ace of Spades is the only one that is decorated or detailed. This could mean that Hideyoshi Nagachika plays a really important part throughout the whole manga [10].

Hide was ranked 4th in the character popularity poll presented in Tokyo Ghoul:re manga chapter 17.

The first three place were taken by Kirishima Touka, Kaneki Ken and Sasaki Haise.

In the Tokyo Ghoul stage play, Hide is played by Shuuto Miyazaki, who is also known by his role as Shinkai Hayato in the Yowamushi Pedal stage play and Nakamura Shinpachi in Hakuouki musicals. He will also play as Natsu in the Fairy Tail stage play this year [5].
