Zett is a high school student who loves reading light novels, web novels, and manga. He also loves watching various movies and series.

This list includes light novel recommendations with the theme 'over-powered main character' or simply 'OP MC'.

Even though these are light novel recommendations, a few web novels are also included. Moreover, the list not only contains Japanese light and web novels, but Korean and Chinese novels as well.

Legendary Moonlight Sculptor

Genre: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, School Life, Sci-fi

Personal Rating: 4/5

Plot Summary

The main character is a man forsaken by the world and strapped for cash. He is known as the legendary God of War in the highly popular MMORPG, Continent of Magic. At the time of his coming of age ceremony, he decides to say goodbye. He attempts to earn a little something for his time, and his attempt ripples into an effect none could ever have imagined.

Through a series of coincidences, his legendary avatar is sold for 3.1 billion won. He is briefly elated, only to plunge into despair at losing almost all of it to vicious loan sharks. But now that he knows there's money to be earned through gaming, he rises from the abyss with newfound resolve and steps forward into the new age of games led by the first-ever Virtual Reality MMORPG, Royal Road.

This is the legend of Lee Hyun on his path to becoming Emperor with only his family-loving heart, his boundless desire for money, his unexpected mind, his diligently forged body and the talent of hard work backing him.

Reason to Read

Aside from the main character being insanely over-powered, he also has a very unique personality. He is very lucky, and can successfully acquire rare skills, encounter important characters, and complete missions with Rank S difficulty. The plot can be considered fast-paced, though some parts can get a little boring. The romantic scene with the love interest and some real-life and drama scenes can be awkward. The action scenes are excellent, though. Overall, I assure you this is a good novel to read.

Yuusha Isagi no Maou Hanashi

Genre: Action/Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Harem, Mystery, Romance, Shounen, Tragedy

Personal Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

"From now on, will you accompany me?"

The moment he confessed his love to a girl he was walking with, the boy was thrown into the future. The one who summoned him was the Princess of the Demons because he was the one who killed the descendants of the Demon Lord.

"P-Please, Great Demon Lords . . . please save us demons from the evil hands of the adventurers!"

To save the demons on the verge of their downfall, and also to meet the girl he loves, he became not the Hero Isagi, but the Demon Lord Candidate Isagi.

Source: Rebirth Online World

Reason to Read

The main character is quite original in that he had experienced being a hero, and will now experience being the enemy of humans. I also like the fact that after he had been summoned back, the world he once knew had changed so much, in a way that he couldn't predict. Though there are scenes which were written awkwardly, and too few action and fighting scenes, it’s still a good light novel to read for fun.

"Lazy Dungeon Master" Illustration
"Lazy Dungeon Master" Illustration | Source

Lazy Dungeon Master

Genre: Fantasy, Comedy

Personal Rating: 2/5

Plot Summary

“Hey, hurry up and massacre those bandits!”

“No way, I don’t want to work…”

Spending my daily life in leisure, that was my pastime—until I was summoned into another world and met a blonde loli who introduced herself as Dungeon Core No. 695.

“Save my dungeon. By the way, if the dungeon core is destroyed, you’ll also go down with me as the dungeon master.”

A dungeon with a single room. Moreover, one already controlled by bandits. This is a [Checkmate] no matter how you look at it. Guess there’s nothing to do but somehow get out of this situation so that I can [Not Work]!!

Source: Ziru’s Musings

Reason to Read

As a dungeon master, the main character is seriously overpowered in that he is capable of beating high-classed dungeon managers. Moreover, the main character also has the wits and brains to solve difficult situations he is involved in too. Unfortunately, the light novel is a bit fast-paced and some character profiles and designs (e.g., behavior and personality) don't fit the situation.

"LV999 Villager" Illustration
"LV999 Villager" Illustration | Source

LV999 Villager

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen

Personal Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

In this world, the concept of levels exist. Besides the people who make their living defeating monsters, most people are only around Level 1 to 5. Not just anyone can go out to hunt monsters; it’s heavily influenced by the role appointed by god. There are eight God-appointed roles: Warriors, Fighters, Clerics, Magicians, Rogues, Merchants, Hunters, and Sorcerers. Those blessed with extraordinary power are divided into three types: royalty, heroes, and sages. The majority of the population has no such powers and most live by farming or running shops. Towns are developed by those with the weakest role…villagers. For the powerless villagers, going out to hunt monsters is equivalent to committing suicide. But one day, a certain two-year-old child given the role of Villager notices something: defeating a monster earns great wealth.

Source: Xant and Minions

Reasons to Read

If you want an insanely overpowered character, then this is the light novel that is best for you. The MC is capable of defeating enemies with his combat skills (which could be compared to One Punch Man). The comedy is pretty great, especially in scenes with the MC’s macho girl sidekick (I’m not kidding). The light novel is written and translated quite well—particularly the fight and drama scenes.

"Isekai Canceller" Fan Art
"Isekai Canceller" Fan Art | Source

Isekai Canceller

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Mature, Romance, Seinen

Personal Rating: 2/5

Plot Summary

A giant meteorite fell down to Earth and left it in ruin. But on the last day, “He” was casually playing a video game. The moment the Earth was destroyed he found himself in a world exactly like the game he was just playing. The job he had was the detestable job, “Canceller.” Its main skill was to cancel. But instead of falling into despair, with his pathetic skill in hand, the main character decided to live in this other world and begin his adventure.

With enough creativity, could his pathetic skill actually be the strongest? Go and rescue the slave girl! His canceling tale is about to begin―

Source: Sorachi Daichi (Author)

Reason to Read

The main character has a unique skill that allows him to cancel anything (and can be applied to many situations). Though the novel is slightly slow-paced and some parts can be boring to read—like too many conversations and redundant thoughts of some characters—the plot has been well laid-out.

Gun-Ota ga Mahou Sekai ni Tensei Shitara

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem, Romance, Seinen

Personal Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

Hotta Youta is killed while returning home from work on a cold evening. He wakes up being carried by a bunny-eared woman! Featuring Reincarnation, Guns and Harem, it’s a Gun vs Magic Story that gives Hotta Youta a new life… and an edge!

Source: Novel Update

Reason to Read

This is one of the typical light novels where the protagonist retains the memory of his previous life and tries to build new things, in this case, guns, from those memories. With his choice of weapon, obviously, he's overpowered so much that he can easily kill monsters at a distance. However, the main character has a kind and considerate personality, which means he's easily deceived. Furthermore, there are fewer fighting scenes in this novel, and more conversations and romantic interactions.

For My Daughter, I Might Even Be Able to Defeat the Demon King

Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Romance, Slice of Life

Personal Rating: 2/5

Plot Summary

The main character met a girl; a young girl branded with the mark of a criminal. That was the beginning of the story. “Crap, my daughter’s so cute!”-- This is the story of the two who became an overly protective parent and an adopted child, and their changing relationship to one another.

Source: Konobuta

Reason to Read

I remembered little about this light novel. The story revolves around the main character parenting a child he found in the forest. The MC is certainly skillful and leads a comfortable life from killing monsters in the area before finding his "daughter." One lacking aspect of this light novel is the fighting (again) and almost all situations focus on the daughter. If you're a child/parenting theme lover, then I'd surely recommended this light novel.

"Isekai Monster Breeder" Illustration

Isekai Monster Breeder

Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem, Mature, Romance

Personal Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

When sent to a different world, Souta was given the unpopular profession of ‘Monster Tamer.’ However, Souta got the skill “Capsule Ball” which has a 100% chance to capture a companion.

Source: Rumanshi’s Lair

Reason to Read

The light novel reminds me of Kono Suba and Pokémon. It's like Pokémon in the sense that the "Capsule Ball" resembles the obvious Pokéball and the profession of "Monster Tamer" focuses on catching and taming monsters. On the other hand, it also resembles Kono Suba wherein the MC first tested his skill on the Goddess and thus resulting in her being enslaved. The plot is quite good in every chapter.

Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai Kara Kuru Sou Desu Yo

Persona Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

Sakamaki Izayoi, Kudou Asuka, and Kasukabe Yō have tremendous powers and are bored with the regular world.

An envelope arrives for each person, and when each open their envelopes, they are stunned to see the scenery around them change to a world they had never encountered before. They’ve been summoned by the Black Rabbit to help the community “No Name” to overthrow the Demon Lords.

Reason to Follow

Anyone who has watched the anime adaptation would certainly be encouraged to read the light novel version. Though some parts have been changed, the anime still follows the same story as the light novel. Three main protagonists are depicted, each with their own unique abilities that give the light novel a sense of style. Moreover, the light novels deal with one perspective on several scenes (especially the action-fighting scenes) which gives a new experience for the readers. The main character Izayoi's story and power help make each chapter exciting.

No Game No Life

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Harem, Romance, Shounen, Supernatural

Personal Rating: 4/5

Plot Summary

Meet Sora and Shiro, a brother and sister who are loser shut-ins by normal standards. But these siblings don’t play by the rules of the “crappy game” that is average society. In the world of gaming, this genius pair reigns supreme, their invincible avatar so famous that it’s the stuff of urban legend. So when a young boy calling himself God summons the siblings to a fantastic alternate world where war is forbidden and all conflicts–even those involving national borders–are decided by the outcome of games, Sora and Shiro have pretty much hit the jackpot. But they soon learn that in this world, humanity, cornered and outnumbered by other species, survives within the confines of one city. Will Sora and Shiro, two failures at life, turn out to be the saviors of mankind? Let the games begin…

Source: Novel Updates

Reason to Read

Many people are hyped to read the light novel version after watching the anime. With the two MCs' unique personalities, each serious scene becomes lighthearted and comical. Moreover, the MCs overpowered intelligence makes them super strong, and I'm sure you've guessed already that they've never lost any game except to each other. Additionally, this is such a great series because each volume is refreshing in that they conquer a new race and face a new set of challenges.

Plot Summary

Even though they were separated in during childhood, he always thought about her, and continued making efforts to fulfill the promise they made. Haruto learned martial arts so he could protect her. He learned to cook in order to spend time with her in the kitchen. He did house chores, worked on a farm, and studied diligently. He did everything, even though it was uncertain if his dream would ever be fulfilled. Yet he kept believing in that future. Acknowledging Haruto’s effort, his father gave in and allowed Haruto to enter a high school near his childhood friend’s residence. That high school would be the stage for Haruto’s highly anticipated reunion with his childhood friend, who, unexpectedly, also attends. Thump, he could feel his heart throb; that’s right, there’s no way he could mistake her for anyone else, It was her, the most important person who was so far, yet so close to him. Haruto was filled with joy of another meeting with her, but at the same time, cursed fate...

Walking by her side was an unknown guy.

Haruto felt scared; what if they were going out? With that thought in mind, he no longer had the courage to call out to her. Watching from faraway, troubled by his fears, he continued like this until she suddenly vanished.

From that day on, Haruto’s worries changed into never-ending regret. The first day he knew she disappeared, he realized the big mistake he'd made. His heart felt like it was going to break, screams of grief, sorrow, bitterness, all stirred throughout his entire body. However, he wouldn’t give up. He couldn’t give up. There wasn’t a chance that he’d give up. He still hadn’t confessed his feelings. With a slight hope that he may be able to find her in Tokyo, Haruto moved out of his house and attended the University there.

Three years have passed since Haruto entered University. Not even once did he forget about her. Between his studies and part-time jobs, he would ask the police to investigate, even going as far as to search for her by himself, on foot if he must. But her disappearance was total and mysterious. One day Haruto was taking the bus home. It was just before evening, and at the time there were only a few people on the bus. Haruto sat there, silently gazing at the passing scenery outside the window. Suddenly his view shook, the bus received an impact, and Haruto’s consciousness became blank in an instant. The next time he woke up, he was no longer himself. He was a 7 year old boy named, “Rio.” His surroundings were dirty and foul… slums. Haruto soon found himself in a different world than his, harsher and unforgiving. In his mind, were the wish to see his beloved one more time, and the wish, to exact revenge on the bastard who killed his mother in front of him…

Reason to Read

The first thing you'll notice after reading this light novel is the fast-paced progression of the story, which often skips ahead in time (such that it will be stated that three years have passed without even describing what happened during those years). No one can really deny that the MC is seriously overpowered and additionally, he is of royal descent. What I really like about this novel is that it does not focus on romantic interests, but on the goal of the MC for revenge, and the technological advancement of the MC's empire due to his teachings.

Seiun wo Kakeru

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Shounen, Slice of Life, Supernatural

Personal Rating: 2/5

Plot Summary

There was once an ordinary and remote village where a man who had no relatives appeared. Since then, everything has changed. Labor became pleasant, people stopped starving and became healthier, the population increased. On top of that, the village started to flourish in trade. A time of huge change and considerable turmoil was about to begin, a revolution that no man could turn a blind eye to.

In the ancient bronze era, even more distant than medieval times, a certain blacksmith was yet to make his greatest effort.

Source: koreyorihachidori

Reason to Read

Most readers, including me, would say this light novel is indeed very light—meaning it does not really include heavy conflict or problems in the story. The novel focuses mainly on the improvement of the transported MC's village as the MC makes upgraded tools and weapons for the village. Moreover, the life of the MC is certainly peaceful, as he already has a wife and newborn child. Other than that, if technological advancement and kingdom building is your hype, then here's the light novel for you.

"Skeleton Knight, in Another World" Novel Poster

Skeleton Knight, in Another World

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Shounen, Supernatural

Personal Rating: 3/5

Plot Summary

The protagonist fell asleep while playing an online game. He then awoke in a strange world with his game character's appearance. In a state of shock, he noticed that he was equipped with nothing but his strongest weapon and armor. To make matters worse, our hero’s appearance was changed by the special avatar skin, "Skeleton," when he entered this new world. The protagonist wanted to live without drawing attention, but he got acquainted with the dark elf Ariane and listened to her request.

Source: uselessno4

Reason to Read

The prologue and character profile of the protagonist does resemble the MC of Overlord at a glance. However, this light novel's MC is a cursed holy undead, and thus could certainly gain back his human body (though personality-wise, it does resemble Overlord's MC). Moreover, unlike Overlord, the MC does not have a companion in this novel. On the other hand, though the fighting scenes are clearly described, the plot does not really follow a definite path. Moreover, the MC's go-with-the-flow personality is a little distasteful, in my opinion.

"Tales of Gods and Demon" Light Novel Cover

Tales of Gods and Demon

Genre: Action, Comedy, Fantasy, Harem, Martial Arts, Romance, Xuanhuan

Personal Rating: 4/5

Plot Summary

Killed by a Sage Emperor and reborn as his 13-year-old self, Nie Li was given a second chance at life. A second chance to change everything; to save his loved ones and his beloved city. He shall once again battle with the Sage Emperor to avenge his death. With the vast knowledge he accumulated in his previous life, he has a better starting point. Although he started as the weakest, without a doubt, he will climb the steps towards the strongest. Mastering the strongest cultivation technique, wielding the strongest demon spirits, he shall reach the pinnacle of Martial Arts. Enmities of the past will be settled in this new lifetime.

“Since I’m back, then in this lifetime, I shall become the King of Gods that dominates everything. Let everything else tremble beneath my feet!”

Reason to Read

One of the best novels I'm currently reading. The protagonist has a determined spirit, and with his knowledge of his previous life (since he was transported back in time), he is so very very over-powered that he is comparable to his elders and seniors. Moreover, the plot is fast progressing, and I don't think the fighting scenes are lacking either. Much more, the way that the author describes the situation is simply excellent.

"Adamantine Dragon in the Crystal World" Cover
"Adamantine Dragon in the Crystal World" Cover | Source

Adamantine Dragon in the Crystal World

Genre: Action/Adventure, Comedy

Personal Rating: 2/5

Plot Summary

In a fantasy world known as [Flow] there was a Demon Emperor whose power was so ridiculous that gods couldn't even compare to him. Then one day he got hit by a powerful curse and got banished to a completely different world. That's roughly how it happened. Roughly…

After entering the New World our protagonist found his body being disintegrated and most of his magical powers useless...

Source: Royal Road

Reason to Read

Mecha and magic together is an unusual combination. The MC is over-powered based on his previous life and body that fused with his current body. It's also a bit mature-themed, as he has a harem with girls who are also very overpowered. In addition, what I certainly like most about this light novel is how the MC conceals much of his power.

How about adding some Xianxia/Wuxia and Korean novels to the bunch. Just like I Shall Seal the Heavens, Renegade Immortal for example. The protagonists from these novels start weak but by the end of the novel, they could basically create and destroy universes. And how about, Overgeared and Seoul Station Necromancer for Korean? Overgeared is, as the title says, an Overgeared person that destroys people in the VMMORPG world of Satisfy, plus the godly character development is a delicious side dish. Seoul Station Necromancer if you also want an OP mc that is basically a 1 man army

I usually don't read many review lists, but I quite liked your explanantions and recommendations. I have saved several of the suggested light novels to read now! And indirectly you helped me FINALLY, finally figure out what the name of the light novel I've been searching for, Arifureta. I would also recommend reading these:

        1. Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? (I’m A Spider, So What?)

        2. Dungeon Defense

        3. Overlord (Well, there was no chance to leave it without a mention, huh? However it seems like you've already read it, although not included it in the list.)

I'm also planning on reading The Saga of Tanya the Evil. I can't include it since I haven't read it yet, so some reviews may be helpful :)

Was a good list but when Tales of demons and Gods got included i got the impression that it darkened the whole list as a whole by what was written...

In my personal truth it is just a read for those who do not care and are simply waiting for more updates on others, nothing, i mean nothing sets it apart from the others with non existing personality's for the supporting cast. and since this is a universal truth if you look at it with scrutinizing eyes and compare it with others, it would then come in to question if the others are truly good or bad as the writer says
