10. Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 1,600 Meters
  • Product Line: Imperial-Class Star Destroyer
  • Cost: 150-Million Credits

Overview

The massive Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer (ISD-II) was a warship based on the original ISD design. Sometimes referred to as the Impstar-Deuce, the ISD-II was first developed by Kuat Drive Yards for use by the Imperial Navy in siege operations, search and destroy, or command-ship roles (when necessary). Following its predecessor’s design, the ship featured a wedge-shaped exterior, raised bridge tower, and an intricate communications tower situated between two deflector shield generators on either side. Powered by three separate KDY Destroyer-I ion engines, the 1,600 meter craft was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 60 MGLT (Megalights Per Hour) in realspace, or nearly 965 KPH (Kilometers Per Hour) in atmospheric conditions.

Due to its tremendous size, the ship required approximately 27,850 crewmen along with an additional 9,200 naval officers to operate. Likewise, the ship was capable of carrying upwards of 9,700 stormtroopers at a time, with the capacity to run nearly two years without resupply. With such a large crew onboard, the Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer was a formidable vessel capable of carrying out planetary assaults and deep-space operations by itself (or as part of a larger fleet).

Armament and Firepower

In addition to its massive size, the ISD-II was renowned for its powerful weapons system and armament which provided the ship with incredible firepower. Approximately 60 turbolaser batteries lined the ship, along with 60 heavy ion-cannon emplacements, and 10 separate tractor beam projectors. Augmenting their impressive firepower were approximately 72 TIE Fighters (consisting of 48 standard fighters, 12 TIE Bombers, as well as 12 TIE Interceptors). Additionally, 20 AT-ATs, 30 AT-STs, as well as 2 Gozanti-class cruisers, and 8 separate Lambda-class shuttles were also standard complements. Taken together, a single Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer was capable of holding its own against the majority of adversaries, making it a major threat to nearly any planetary system.

9. Allegiance Class Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 2,200 Meters
  • Product Line: Super Star Destroyers
  • Cost: 27.2 Billion Credits

Overview

The incredibly large and massive Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer (also known as the Allegiance-Class Battlecruiser) was a wedge-shaped ship that followed the Victory, Procursator, and Imperial-Class Star Destroyer designs. Stretching over 2,200 meters in length, the ships were first brought into service around 3 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin), serving as a “Heavy Star Destroyer” unit under the command of Admiral Kendal Ozzel. Following the death of Emperor Palpatine, however, these ships were eventually refitted to serve as command ships rather than their traditional role of escort and patrol, respectively.

In order to control a ship of this size and magnitude, the Empire was required to staff the Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer with approximately 51,500 crew members (including both enlisted and officers). This was followed by a complement of 5,500 troops. Likewise, 7 separate engine units were also equipped for the ship, allowing the cruiser to reach an approximate speed of 10 MGLTs (a considerably slow speed when compared to the ISD-II).

Armament and Firepower

Unlike many of the other Star Destroyers utilized by the Galactic Empire, the Allegiance line was renowned for its lack of ventral hangar bays as well as its total absence of starfighters and ground-based vehicles. This was due to the fact that the ship was designed entirely for escort roles, as it utilized its incredible firepower to protect friendly ships from harm. Typical armament for the Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer included 80 heavy turbolaser batteries, 50 heavy turbolaser cannons, 50 ion-cannon emplacements, as well as 20 warhead launchers, and 15 separate tractor beam projectors. Combined with its smoother superstructure (which provided better armor and coverage for the ship’s bridge), the Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer was a truly remarkable ship capable of holding its own against nearly anything the Rebel Alliance could throw at it.

Overview

The Bellator-Class Star Destroyer (also known as the Bellator-Class Dreadnought) was a massive warship developed for the Imperial Navy by Kuat Drive Yards. First introduced in 3 ABY (alongside the Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer), the Bellator borrowed many of its designs from both the Mandator and Mandator II-class dreadnaughts of the Galactic Republic era, but with a sleeker and faster design (earning it the nickname “fast dreadnaught” by the Imperial Navy). Utilizing 14 separate aft thrusters, the ship was capable of reaching an incredible speed of 60 MGLTs, allowing it to match the ISD-II and its equivalents with relative ease (an impressive feat, considering that the ship was over 7,200 meters long). This speed allowed the Bellator-Class Star Destroyers to perform in a variety of combat roles (either alone or as part of a fleet), including search and destroy, escort, and patrol operations.

In order to operate this massive warship, the average crew size for a Bellator-Class Star Destroyer was approximately 88,000 (including both enlisted and officers); however, a minimum of 28,000 could safely pilot these ships if needed. Additionally, 28,000 stormtroopers could also accompany a full crew alongside 125 kilotons of cargo. Taken together, the Bellator-Class Star Destroyer line was capable of operating four years without resupply, making it an ideal craft for long-term deployments.

Armament and Firepower

As a warship, the Bellator-Class Star Destroyer was primarily designed to inflict massive amounts of damage on enemy ships in order to make “holes” in their fleet’s formation. To accomplish this, the ships were outfitted with 94 heavy turbolasers, 176 medium laser turrets, 12 heavy ion-cannons, multiple concussive missile launchers, and 10 separate tractor beam projectors. Augmenting this impressive array of weaponry was approximately 120 TIE Fighters and bombers, along with 24 shuttles and light freighters. Taken together, the Bellator-Class Star Destroyer reflected an impressive array of engineering and ingenuity, and was truly one of the most dangerous ships in the Empire’s arsenal of warships.

Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer.

7. Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat-Entralla Engineering
  • Length: 2,900 Meters
  • Product Line: Resurgent-Class Star Destroyers
  • Cost: 375 Million Credits

Overview

The Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer was a battlecruiser developed by Kuat-Entralla Engineering for use by the First Order Navy around 34 ABY. Based primarily on the designs of the Imperial-Class Star Destroyers utilized by the Galactic Empire, the Resurgent-Class was an incredibly massive vessel measuring over 2,900 meters in length, with an overall width of nearly 1,483 meters. Characterized as a multi-role ship, the craft could be utilized as a carrier, destroyer, escort, or command ship and was powered by 3 separate KDY Destroyer ion engines, as well as eight secondary ion-engines (allowing the ship to match nearly any starfighter in speed). Moreover, they were heavily armored, possessing an off-center bridge that was built into the existing structure of the vessel (making it less of a target to encroaching enemy forces).

In order to operate a ship of this size, approximately 55,000 enlisted crew members and 19,000 officers were required to fly a Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer. These ships were also equipped to carry an additional 8,000 stormtroopers for extended periods of time. With a large cargo capacity, these vessels are believed to have been capable of operating in excess of two years without resupply; however, these numbers have not yet been confirmed in canon sources.

Armament and Firepower

As a vessel that was designed for orbital assaults and ship-to-ship combat, the Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer line was designed with a wide-array of offensive potential. This included over 1,500 turbolaser batteries and ion-cannons, along with “point-defense” quad missile emplacements, and multiple tractor beam projectors. Enhancing their vast armament was two TIE Fighter squadrons (with bombers) that could be deployed via lateral hangar entrances on both the port and starboard sides of the ship. Likewise, most Resurgent cruisers included 100+ Atmospheric Assault Landers, speeders, artillery, and ground-based transports; thus, allowing them to provide substantial support to First Order troops engaged on the ground. Taken together, a single Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer was more than capable of wreaking havoc on a planetary system or fleet of enemy ships, as their tremendous firepower made them nearly unstoppable in the heat of battle.

6. Assertor-Class Star Dreadnought

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 15,000 Meters
  • Product Line: Super Star Destroyers; Star Dreadnaughts
  • Cost: 150 Billion Credits

Overview

The powerful Assertor-Class Star Dreadnought (occasionally referred to as the “Assertor-Class Star Destroyer”) was a series of massive warships first introduced around 2 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). Designed by the infamous Kuat Drive Yards, a typical Assertor-Class vessel stretched nearly 15 kilometers in length, and followed a dagger-like shape similar to the Executor-Class. Characterized as a “Sector Command and Control Ship” by the Imperial Navy, these multi-role vessels were regularly cited as one of the Empire’s most powerful capital ships, as they were capable of holding (and defending) large swathes of space without additional support. Propelling these huge ships through space was a series of 28 aft thrusters, a “Class 2” Hyperdrive, as well as a SFS I-a2b solar ionization reactor.

As with many of the vessels presented on our current list, the Assertor-Class Star Dreadnought required tremendous manpower to pilot it through space. On average, most vessels required approximately 125,000 officers, enlisted crew, gunners, and pilots to reach full operational levels. Moreover, each vessel was equipped to carry 145,000 metric tons of cargo, along with 20,000 stormtroopers (and their supporting staff). With this capacity, each Assertor-Class ship was capable of operating three years without resupply, making it a perfect choice for sector control in the far reaches of space.

Armament and Firepower

As a member of the Super Star Destroyer line, each Assertor-Class warship was equipped with a tremendous number of offensive and defensive systems. Standard armament included 40 quad heavy turbolaser batteries, 30 ion-cannon batteries, 10 twin heavy turbolasers (dorsal), 30 light turbolaser batteries, as well as 40 twin battleship ion cannons. In addition, most were also equipped with 60 turret-mounted laser cannons, 90 concussion missile launchers, as well as 20 tractor beam projectors. Complementing this array of weapons was 120 starfighters (including standard TIE Fighters, bombers, and advanced spacecraft); thus, bolstering their offensive and defensive capabilities dramatically. Likewise, the ships were also well-equipped for ground-based operations, as each Assertor carried an unknown number of landing craft, shuttles, gunboats, AT-ATs, and various AT-series walkers. When combined, each Assertor-Class Star Dreadnought was capable of inflicting serious damage against enemy fleets, making them one of the Galactic Empire’s most powerful (and feared) vessels of all-time.

Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer.

Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer.

5. Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards & Fondor Shipyards
  • Length: 19,000 Meters
  • Product Line: Super Star Destroyers
  • Cost: 325 Billion Credits

Overview

The Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer (sometimes referred to as the Executor-Class Star Dreadnought) was a massive heavy warship utilized for both command ships and flagships in the Imperial Navy. Stretching over 19,000 meters in length, these vessels were among the largest ships in the galaxy during the Galactic Civil War, and were nearly invulnerable in combat due to their tremendous armament, strength, and fighter support. Developed through a joint operation involving Kuat Drive Yards and Fondor Shipyards, the Executor-Class followed a dagger-like design, followed by a KDY-style command bridge, and black/grey coloration scheme. When completed, they were approximately 100 times more massive than a standard Star Destroyer design, requiring 13 “Executor-50.x” engines to propel it forward.

As one can imagine, operating a ship of this magnitude required a tremendous amount of manpower from the Galactic Empire. On average, approximately 279,144 crewmembers (including enlisted personnel and officers) and 1,590 different gunners were needed for full-strength capabilities; however, a skeleton crew of 50,000 personnel could operate the vessel with limited capabilities (if needed). Likewise, the ship was capable of carrying 38,000 stormtroopers at a time. With room for 250,000 metric tons of cargo space, the Executor-Class Super Star Destroyers were able to operate six years without being resupplied, making it a logical choice for operations on the Outer Rim and Unknown Regions of space.

Armament and Firepower

As both a command ship and warship, the Executor-Class Super Star Destroyers were equipped with tremendous amounts of armament. This included 2,000 turbolaser batteries, 2,000 heavy turbolaser batteries, 250 concussion missile launchers, 250 heavy ion cannons, as well as 500 “point-defense” laser cannons. The ships were also equipped with an additional 40 tractor beam projectors, resulting in a total armament of 5,000+ emplacements. As if these weapons weren’t enough, all Executor-Class vessels were also loaded with at least 144 starfighters (although several thousand could be housed in major operations). Likewise, an impressive number of ground-assault vehicles and supplies were also placed in each vessel, including 30 AT-ATs, 40 AT-STs, 200 support craft, and 3 prefabricated bases for use during planetary assaults. Taken together, the Executor-Class Super Star Destroyers were an incredibly powerful line of warships capable of striking fear in even the most battle-hardened of opponents.

4. Vengeance-Class Super Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 19,000 Meters
  • Product Line: Super Star Destroyers
  • Cost: 300+ Billion Credits

Overview

The supermassive Vengeance-Class Super Star Destroyer was a warship developed by Kuat Drive Yards for use by the Imperial Navy. First introduced around 4 ABY, the Vengeance-Class vessels were originally designed to be both a warship and command ship, but were later classified as mobile space stations due to their incredible size (stretching over 19 kilometers in length). Based on the Executor-Class design (described above), each Vengeance vessel followed a slender design that mimicked a sword-like design (rather than the traditional “dagger-like” image personified in earlier ships). Propelling these massive vessels were a series of three primary engines, followed by an additional eight secondary and tertiary engines which allowed the ship to reach realspace speeds of approximately 11 MGLTs.

Similar to other Super Star Destroyers, the Vengeance-Class required tremendous manpower to pilot them through space. Although exact numbers are unknown (due to a lack of information presented in canon sources), it is currently estimated that at least 200,000 crewmen (including gunners, enlisted personnel, and officers) were needed for full operational status. However, these crews could be cut down to 50,000 when needed. Likewise, each vessel was equipped to carry approximately 30,000 additional stormtroopers, with enough rations and supplies to last upwards of three years.

Armament and Firepower

As with any warship of this size, armaments on the Vengeance-Class vessels were impressive. On average, each vessel was equipped with 1,000 turbolaser cannons, 1,000 heavy turbolaser cannons, and 250 concussion missile launchers (with 20 missiles each). Additionally, most were also equipped with 250 heavy ion-cannons, 500 “point-defense” cannons, as well as 40 separate tractor beam projectors. Complementing this massive amount of armament was 18 TIE Advanced Squadrons, 12 TIE Defender Squadrons, as well as 6 Assault Gunboat squadrons; thus, augmenting its capabilities tremendously due to the advanced nature of these starfighters. In regard to ground forces, almost nothing is currently known about their vehicle and support craft capabilities. Nevertheless, most believe their numbers to be in line with most Super Star Destroyers. As such, 30 AT-ATs, 40 AT-STs, 200+ support craft, and three prefabricated bases (and its components) are among the most accepted numbers in regard to its capacity (as of 2022). For these reasons, the Vengeance-Class Super Star Destroyer is a truly one-of-a-kind vessel capable of outperforming nearly any ship (or force) that it is confronted with.

Xyston-Class Star Destroyer.

Xyston-Class Star Destroyer.

3. Xyston-Class Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat-Entralla Engineering
  • Length: 2,406 Meters
  • Product Line: Imperial-Class Star Destroyers; Battlecruisers
  • Cost: Unknown

Overview

The powerful Xyston-Class Star Destroyer (also known as the “Xyston-Class Destroyer,” the “Final Order Star Destroyer,” or the “Sith Star Destroyer”) was a warship line developed by Kuat-Entralla Engineering. Developed as a top-secret project around 3 ABY, the Xyston-Class destroyers were based heavily on the original Imperial-Class Star Destroyer designs from the Galactic Civil War era. Following a dagger-like shape, each vessel stretched approximately 2,406 meters in length, with an overall height of nearly 682 meters. They could be distinguished from early vessels, however, by their inclusion of red markings on the hull, and by their inclusion of an axial superlaser. Powering these warships was a solar ionization reactor, as well as seven separate ion engines.

In contrast to other destroyers, the Xyston-Class was designed with a greater number of automated systems in order to cut crew sizes significantly. On average, most Xyston vessels required approximately 29,585 crewmen, including both officers and enlisted personnel. Likewise, the ships were capable of housing 12,000 stormtroopers at a time, with the capacity to last two years without resupply. This made the Xyston-Class of destroyers well-suited for long-range missions and operations.

Armament and Firepower

Despite its relatively small design (when compared to some of the Super Star Destroyers described in our current list), the Xyston-Class Star Destroyer line was heavily armed and battle-ready. Characterized as an orbital bombardment vessel, each ship was equipped with 40 heavy turbolaser batteries, 40 ion cannons, 40 “point-defense” laser cannons, as well as 35 variable-ordnance warhead launchers, and 10 heavy tractor beam projectors. Its most powerful weapon, however, was the impressive axial superlaser that fired a pulsating burst from its reactor. Utilizing kyber crystals, a single blast from a Xyston was capable of destroying an entire planet within minutes.

As if this impressive armament wasn’t enough, each Xyston-Class destroyer was also equipped with a complement of 72 starfighters to provide fighter support. When taken together, all of these elements provided the vessel with tremendous offensive and defensive capabilities, making it a fearsome addition to the Sith Eternal and Final Order’s line of warships. With the added capability of destroying entire planets, the Xyston-Class Star Destroyer was truly one of the most powerful Star Destroyers of all time.

Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer.

2. Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 15,000 Meters
  • Product Line: Super Star Destroyers
  • Cost: Unknown

Overview

The massive Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer (sometimes referred to as the “Sovereign-Class Star Destroyer”) was a vessel originally developed by Kuat Drive Yards for use by the Imperial Navy. Requested by the Emperor himself, the ship stretched approximately 15,000 meters in length, making it one of the largest Imperial vessels of all time. Designed for the purpose of strengthening the Galactic Empire’s navy for the foreseeable future, the ship was still under construction during the Battle of Endor (even though work had commenced on the project nearly four years prior). As such, the ship never saw combat, and was believed to have been lost during Operation Shadow Hand before it could be finished; thus, dealing a serious blow to the Imperial Remnant and their quest to subdue the New Republic.

In order to pilot a vessel of this size and magnitude, the Empire was already planning to devote approximately 601,670 crewmen and 4,075 gunners to the ship once it was completed (including officers, technicians, and enlisted personnel). However, canon sources estimate that the ship could have potentially been operated with a skeleton crew of only 86,000 personnel (with greatly diminished capabilities). In regard to passengers, each Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer was designed to carry nearly 130,100 stormtroopers. With a cargo capacity of 400,000 metric tons, it is estimated that the ship was capable of operating five years without resupply.

Armament and Firepower

In addition to its tremendous size and capacity, the Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer was designed for intense battle situations. Standard armament included 500 heavy laser cannons, 500 turbolaser batteries, 75 ion cannons, as well as 100 tractor beam projectors. The ship was also equipped with 5 gravity well generators capable of preventing enemies from escaping via hyperspace, and an axial superlaser capable of destroying an entire planet (similar to the Death Star). Complementing this impressive armament were 35 TIE Interceptor squadrons, 5 TIE Bomber squadrons, and 75 AT-ATs for ground-based operations. When viewed alongside one another, each of these aspects made the Sovereign-Class Super Star Destroyer one of the strongest and most powerful warships in galactic history. If not for its early demise (during construction), the ship could have potentially turned the tide of the war in favor of the Imperial Remnant.

Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer.

Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer.

1. Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer

  • Manufacturer: Kuat Drive Yards
  • Length: 17,500 Meters
  • Product Line: Star Dreadnaughts
  • Cost: Unknown

Overview

Topping our list of the most powerful Star Destroyer classes is the infamous Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer. Originally developed by Kuat Drive Yards, the massive ship was first introduced around 4 ABY at the request of Emperor Palpatine. Planning to utilize the ship as his personal flagship in the future, the warship was among the largest Super Star Destroyers fielded in galactic history, reaching approximately 17,500 meters (17.5 kilometers) in length. Although slightly dwarfed (in terms of length) by the Executor and Vengeance-Class warships of similar design, its overall mass and volume exceeded their designs tremendously. In fact, the Eclipse was massive enough to even be classified as a mobile space station by some observers in the Imperial Military. As such, six different engines, as well as a “Class 2” hyperdrive were required to propel the vessel through realspace and atmospheric conditions.

Due to its tremendous mass, the Eclipse required an extremely large crew to pilot it through space. For full combat strength, the vessel needed approximately 708,470 crew members, along with an additional 4,175 gunners to man its weapon’s systems. Complementing the crew was approximately 150,000 stormtroopers. With a cargo capacity of 600,000 metric tons, the crew (and passengers) of the Eclipse were capable of going upwards of 10 years without resupply, making it an ideal vessel for the Emperor to manage his vast Empire from.

Armament and Firepower

In addition to its tremendous mass and crew capacity, the Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer was the deadliest ship in the Galactic Empire’s arsenal. For armament, the vessel utilized 550 heavy laser cannons, 500 turbolaser batteries, 75 ion cannons, and 100 tractor beam projectors. In addition, the ship possessed 10 gravity well-projectors capable of pulling enemy vessels from hyperspace (or preventing their escape), along with an axial superlaser similar to the laser used on the first and second Death Star, respectively. Augmenting this impressive arsenal was 600 TIE Interceptors and 96 TIE Bombers that were divided into 58 different squadrons, along with 100 AT-ATs and five prefabricated bases for ground-based operations. When combined, it is not difficult to see why the Eclipse-Class Super Star Destroyer was the most powerful (and deadly) Star Destroyer in the Star Wars universe; a feat that will likely continue for the foreseeable future!
