Top 10 Complete Harry/Hermione Fanfiction

Author:

As an avid HP fanfiction reader I've enjoyed many Harry/Hermione stories. Below you will find my top 10 favorites that are complete.

Before the last two Harry Potter books were released, speculation was rife about who Harry was going to end up with: Ginny or Hermione. Some were unsatisfied with the answer they got. Hordes of disgruntled fans took to fanfiction sites to write their own interpretation of canon, giving rise to "Weasley-bashing" tropes that involve depicting Ron and Ginny in a less than favorable light. J. K. Rowling herself only added fuel to the fire when she mentioned in an interview that "In some ways, Hermione and Harry are a better fit."

To this day, Harry/Hermione, H/Hr, or "Harmony," as it is sometimes known, remains one of the most prevalent het pairings in Harry Potter fanfiction. Out of tens of thousands of fics, I've compiled a list of top ten that stuck with me over the years. Every one of these is complete—there are some abandoned fics that I enjoyed, but they won't be included.

Would Harry and Hermione Have Made a Good Couple?

1. Harry Potter and the Last Horcrux by Mike (Full Pensieve)

Word count: 260,875

Unlike the vast majority of HP fanfiction, Harry Potter and the Last Horcrux begins out of Hogwarts and stars a grown-up trio. The author takes us beyond the shores of Britain, to locations like Iceland, and introduces us to its exotic magic. The story comprises two parts: the first involves fighting Voldemort, and in the second, Harry mourns and deals with the aftermath.

The story isn't very well-known, perhaps due to the fact that it's unavailable on mainstream fanfiction sites like FanFiction.net or ArchiveOfOurOwn.org, but years after it was written, it remains one of my absolute favorites. The Harry/Hermione romance doesn't materialize until the end, but when it does, it makes it all worth it.

2. Blindness by AngelaStarCat

Word count: 324,281

In Blindness by AngelaStarCat, Voldemort's Killing Curse has an unfortunate effect of leaving Harry blind. Since the wizarding world has no way of dealing with such disability, he never goes to Hogwarts, but instead learns to manipulate magic in his own way. When he meets Hermione, who still has the scars from her encounter with the troll, in a Muggle school, he realizes she is magic too and speaks to her.

Blindness is remarkably well-written and original, having no canon rehashing to speak of, and featuring interesting ideas of what it means to be the Master of Death. As Harry grapples with his powers and status, Hermione is always at his side supporting him.

3. Time is the Fire by Oddment Tweak

Word count: 97,317

Oddment Tweak's Time is the Fire takes an approach unusual for H/Hr fics: it sticks to the canon epilogue and starts the story from there. As the title suggests, it involves time travel shenanigans. The main part of the story takes place post-epilogue, where Harry is married to Ginny and Hermione to Ron, and another follows an adult Hermione who revisits the stations of canon and shows them in a new perspective. Despite this setup, the author does not resort to Weasley-bashing to get Harry and Hermione together in the end, which is a high mark for a post-epilogue H/Hr story indeed.

4. Forever Knight by DeliverMeFromEve

Word count: 521,609

Forever Knight is a quintessential Harmony story that features something unexplored in canon: the world of vampires. After Hermione is turned into one, she leaves Harry and her friends to live as a vampire. Years later, Harry is working as an Auror while still pining for Hermione until he stumbles on a bloody case and their paths intersect again.

The story used to be hosted on Portkey.org, a site well-known for Harry/Hermione fics, but one that is sadly lost to the sands of time. You should be able to find it on one unofficial archive or another if you search for it on Google.

5. Vox Corporis by MissAnnThropic

Word count: 327,919

Vox Corporis by MissAnnThropic is a classic Harry/Hermione fic with a heavy focus on romance. It begins with Harry spending the summer after the events in The Goblet of Fire with the Granger family, growing closer to Hermione, and becoming Animagi together. There is a lot of focus on their budding relationship and not much in the way of action and adventure.

The original story has been deleted from FanFiction.net but can still be found reposted in various places if you search for it on Google.

6. Definitions of Romance by Elizabeth Culmer

Word count: 2,148

Compared to the longer fics, Definitions of Romance is a one-shot that is more description than a story, yet it holds a special place in my heart. The author depicts a laid-back and comfortable romantic relationship between Harry and Hermione that grew logically from their friendship. You won't find epic declarations of love here, but the story is all the more refreshing for it.

7. Harry Crow by RobSt

Word count: 737,006

No list of Harmony fanfiction would be complete without an entry from RobSt, a popular author who writes Harry/Hermione stories exclusively. At the time of writing, Harry Crow sits in the fourth spot of most-favorited Harry Potter fics on FanFiction.net and is the author's longest work by far.

Harry Crow features a powerful and knowledgeable Harry who was raised by goblins and won't be manipulated by Dumbledore or anyone else. Like most of RobSt's stories, it is heavy on wish fulfillment and power fantasy, but let's face it, that's exactly what many readers are looking for.

8. That Old House by vanillaparchment

Word count: 123,454

That Old House is a post-war EWE ("Epilogue? What Epilogue?") fic that follows Harry's and Hermione's life as adults. Between its short, easy-to-digest chapters and largely sweet and fluffy tone, it is a comforting, feel-good read.

9. Favorite Things by Stanrick

Word count: 22,110

Favorite Things is a charming and relaxing story about Harry and Hermione having a feud over who gets to sit in a marvelously comfortable armchair before the fireplace in the Gryffindor common room and gradually discovering their feelings for each other. The author has a very particular, almost Shakespearean, writing style and uses twenty words where two would have sufficed at every chance they get, which you may love or hate. You may also need to consult your dictionary at times.

10. Eighth by lorien829

Word count: 142,068

Last but not least is an older story Eighth by a prolific writer lorien829. I could've chosen many of the author's H/Hr stories, but this one won by a small margin. Picking up after the Horcrux hunt, it shows Harry and others dealing with the aftermath, and a slowly developing romance with Hermione. Unlike the previous entries on my list, this one has a more melancholic tone and sticks close to canon characterizations.

Andrew, I’m glad you liked Last Horcrux, and it’s very flattering to be included in your list along with many fine writers whose work I have also enjoyed. Because fanficauthors.net has been virtually inactive for many years, the story was re-archived at fanfiction.net quite a while ago. It’s at https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12069764/1/Harry-Pott...
