If you have ever read anything in the steampunk genre, or seen a movie along those lines, you'll find that the primary themes are inspired by the Victorian age.
With its popularity soaring, there is an entire industry built up around this genre. This includes literature, movies, television, music, cartoons, video games, and cosplay. You can find festivals and conventions everywhere, and steampunk attire is all the rage.
For some people, it's a way of life, for others, a fun hobby that they pursue every once in a while. Most fans come up with an alter ego. This can range from a historical figure to a completely new persona straight from your imagination.
Don't forget that this second self is going to need a name, and here are plenty to choose from. You'll find that this list covers it all including, romantic names, sinister ones, and characters from the genre.
There is even a fun tool to help you come up with your own unique badass name.
What about you...
Romantic Female Victorian Steampunk Names
Just because a name is romantic, doesn't mean it's not a badass one. In fact, romantic names can be quite deceiving. Take the lead character from the Alexia Tarabotti novels. Alexia is a perfectly lovely name, but behind that name lies a pretty tough woman.
Elegant by nature, romantic names can give the impression of innocence, or they can emote a sense of mystery.
There is something quite alluring about a badass steampunk female with a romantic name.
Straightforward Female Victorian Steampunk Names
Not all female Victorian names are romantic. There are many that are more down to earth. These are names that may not be quite as feminine or glamorous, but still project a strong woman, like Hester Shaw from the Mortal Engines series.
They tend to be shorter, and during the Victorian era, they weren't always given to the ladies of the upper classes. A little bit sassy, you know women with these names mean business.
Strong Male Victorian Steampunk Names
When people think of Victorian-era male names, they sometimes think of soft-spoken noble ones. Ones that connote an enjoyment of the finer things in life, while living off of inherited wealth.
But don't forget the strong male names of the time. These names can be found in all walks of life, and hint at strength and bravery. A good example of this type of name is Alek (Prince Aleksandar of Hohenberg) from the Leviathan series.
Of course, strong names don't always represent the good guys. They can also exemplify a touch of evil, or a more sinister side. But let's face it, bad guys can be pretty cool too.
William (Will, Bill)
Earnest Male Victorian Steampunk Names
A name doesn't have to be strong to sound tough. There are many male ones from the Victorian era that, from the sounds of them, may not epitomize a forceful character, but are still pretty badass.
These names tend to capture much of that essence of the males of that era.
Create Your Own Victorian Steampunk Name
Steampunk is considered science fiction, or science fantasy, so the sky is the limit when coming up with unique names. Why not have a little silly fun and create your own.
One way to do it is to alter an existing name. If you think about it, many Victorian names end in ium, onia, ius, us, and ia, but other endings can be added too.
Choose a name you like, or your own, and tweak it a bit to see what you come up with. You are only limited to your imagination.
Here are just a few fun examples.

Last Names Can Make Great Steampunk Names
Don't forget about considering a last name when you are thinking about your persona's first name. There are some good choices to be found, and they can often be for a male or female.
Did You Decide On a Name?
Choosing a name for your persona is all about having fun with it, and making sure you are happy with it.
Hopefully you found some intriguing ones in this list.
