Wonder Woman vs. Supergirl: Who Would Win?
Who Would Win in a Fight?
What if Wonder Woman (Diana) and Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) were to fight for some strange reason, be it mind control spores, manipulation, or some magical influence? Who would win the fight? Both are very mighty super heroines with identical powers and abilities.
About Wonder Woman and Supergirl
Wonder Woman is an Amazon princess granted with superpowers by the Greek gods. Supergirl is a super-powered Kryptonian who is the cousin of Superman. Diana has certain advantages over Supergirl, but Kara has her own leverage, too. To better settle this dispute, you have to look at the powers, abilities, and weaknesses of the two characters.
I have not read too many issues of the New 52, which was DC Comic's 2011 relaunch. I am not too familiar with Supergirl's reboot in the New 52. And as far as I know for Wonder Woman, she is now the biological child of Hippolyta and Zeus. Therefore, this article will be based on the post-crisis versions of the two heroines. At the end of this article, I will reveal which hero I think would win this fight.
Wonder Woman Has a Great Deal of Battle Experience
Wonder Woman has a lot of battle experience due to her upbringing as an Amazon on Paradise Island. Being trained in the way of the warrior, the Amazon princess has advanced training in hand-to-hand combat as well as the use of melee weapons such as swords, maces, and axes.
Diana is also an exemplary military strategist. Black Canary once said that she likes to see Wonder Woman fight because she fights with skill rather than brute force. Wonder Woman's only rival in fighting skills is her mother, Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. Diana is the best of all the Amazons when it comes to fighting. The modern version of Supergirl did receive Amazon training, but her skills are still not on par with Wonder Woman.
Supergirl Has Powers That Wonder Woman Doesn't Have
Although Wonder Woman and Supergirl have similar powers such as superhuman strength, stamina, super speed, and flight, Kara still has many powers that Wonder Woman doesn't have. Supergirl, like her cousin Superman or any Kryptonian exposed to a yellow sun, possesses peripheral powers such as the following:
- heat vision
- arctic breath
- x-ray vision
- super hearing
- super breath
- microscopic vision
- telescopic sight
- infrared vision
In addition, Kara has invulnerable tissues—which is why she is called the Girl of Steel—meaning that her body can withstand excessive force that would instantly kill an ordinary person, such as explosions, high caliber bullets, and blows from other opponents with super strength. The Girl of Steel's impervious body makes her almost impossible to kill; it would take a nuclear explosion to kill Supergirl, and not even that is certain.
While Wonder Woman also has dense bodily tissues, making her resistant to injury and giving her some protection from penetrative weapons such as guns or swords, she is not as invulnerable as Supergirl.
Wonder Woman Has an Arsenal of Magical Equipment
Supergirl may have powers that Wonder Woman doesn't have, but Diana has magical weapons that she can use to her advantage.
Wonder Woman's most popular magic item is her indestructible bullet-proof bracelets made from Zeus' Aegis shield. The silver bracelets are indestructible and can deflect bullets and even Darksied's Omega Beams! The silver bracelets are useless if the wearer isn't skilled on how to properly deflect projectiles (e.g. bullets or lasers). Out of all of the Amazons, only Wonder Woman can deflect bullets with perfect accuracy. Obviously, the Amazon princess can deflect Kara's heat vision with her silver bracelets.
Lasso of Truth
Another magical weapon in Wonder Woman's arsenal is her lasso of truth, which is unbreakable by any demon, god, superhuman, or anyone except in rare circumstances. The lasso of truth can compel anyone to tell the truth and may even reverse the effects of mind control or magic spells. If Wonder Woman fights Supergirl, she could easily end the conflict by binding Supergirl with her lasso.
The tiara that Diana wears can also be used as a weapon; she can toss her tiara at her opponents like a boomerang. The tiara has even cut Superman!
Supergirl Has Many Weaknesses
There is no debate that Supergirl's powers make her a goddess among mortals, but her Kryptonian physiology makes her vulnerable. Kara shares all of the weaknesses of her race, such as vulnerability to Kryptonite, vulnerability to red sunlight, and magic.
If exposed to Kryptonite, Kara (as well as any Kryptonian) would be severely weakened, and her powers would be unavailable to her. The effects of Kryptonite are only temporary, and if she is no longer exposed, then her full powers would return. However, if she is exposed for too long, then the radiation could kill her.
In the light of a red sun, Kara (just like any Kryptonian) is like an ordinary human. Growing up on Krypton's sister planet—which also orbited the red sun Rao—Kara, like the rest of her people, did not experience the benefit of super powers. Since Krypton's civilization existed several millennia before Earth's, the Kryptonians enjoyed highly advanced technology.
Kara is also vulnerable to magic; therefore, her powers can be stripped by magic, and she can be harmed by magical items.
Wonder Woman Has No Known Weaknesses
Wonder Woman doesn't have any known weaknesses. The Golden Age version of Wonder Woman was vulnerable to "Aphrodite's Law," which made her or any Amazon powerless if they allow a male to chain or bound them. This weakness probably doesn't exist now. Of course, the gods who gave Wonder Woman her powers could easily take them away.
Wonder Woman Is One of the Strongest Heroes
Wonder Woman is stronger than Supergirl because her strength derives from the Earth itself, for she is a child of Gaea. While Wonder Woman isn't as strong as Superman, she could still hold her own against Superman. In Wonder Woman Vol 3 #41, the title character defeated Powergirl, who is an alternate version of Supergirl from Earth 2. Diana is much stronger than many super-strong female heroines in the DC Universe such as Donna Troy, Starfire, Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), Supergirl, Mary Marvel, Isis, and Big Barda, among others.
The Winner Is Wonder Woman!
I believe that Wonder Woman would win hands-down because she has an abundance of fighting skills due to being an Amazon. She also possesses magical items such as her lasso of truth and her indestructible bracelets.
That's not to say that Supergirl couldn't hold her own against the Amazon princess. Surely the Girl of Steel would get some good hits in, but she would be inevitably beaten by Wonder Woman. Kara could use her arctic breath to freeze Wonder Woman, but this would only stall Wonder Woman because she would quickly break free. Diana could use her lasso to bind Supergirl and deflect Supergirl's heat vision with her bracelets.

Videos to Help You Decide
I have added two animated videos below. The first video is from the DC animated film Superman/Batman Apokalips, which features Kara Zor El (Supergirl) fighting Darkseid; you really get to see Supergirl's fighting skills and power level.
The second video is from the 2009 Wonder Woman animated film; the title character is fighting Deimos, the son of the war god Ares. In the animated film, you get to see Wonder Woman's awesome combat skills.
