Party Games for 10- to 14-Year-Olds

Updated on June 6, 2016

As a 19 year old I remember the days of party throwing with all my closest friends as a young teen. My sister and I used to throw parties for every occasion, just because we loved to have an excuse to hang out with our best friends and have some fun! So over the years, naturally, I have gained quite a lot of knowledge on the subject of party throwing, and games so I thought I'd share my knowledge with all you lovely people. I hope you enjoy this hub.

Guess Who: This game is quite like the board game. Basically you get a roll of stickers (or paper and sticky tape) and write down the names of some celebrities, friends, movie characters etc. Then, everyone attending the party gets one of these stickers put on their forehead without them seeing it. The aim of the game is to guess who your person/character is on your head first. Starting off with the birthday girl/boy they ask a yes/no answerable question, and this continues around in a circle clockwise. Some sample questions are "Am I a girl?" or "Am I an actor". Once you think you know who you are you can ask, "Am I ______?", If you are correct you are out of the game and win! First person to guess right wins, but keep playing till everyone guesses as this is more fun. You could even buy a cheap little trophy for the winner.

Movie Time: At birthday parties I loved to just sit down at the end of the night and watch my all time favourite movie, or a movie I have not seen before with my friends. This is a simple activity but keeps the kids calm and quite for 1 - 3 hours so its good to wind down at the end of the party and watch a movie.

Movie Quiz: If you do watch a movie at the party a great idea to get the kids to behave and pay attention to the movie is to host a movie quiz afterwards. Divide them into a few teams and come up with some questions, and the team with the most correct answers wins! Some of the questions (based of Harry Potter for example) could be, "What was the name of Harry's owl?", or, "What was the password to the Gryffindor common room?". The team/individual with the most correct answers win. Again you can incorporate prizes/ goody bags for the winners.

Charades: This is an ancient game, but still works a treat every time (and is one game my friends and I still play to this day... we're big kids at heart really). Divide the kids into teams or have them play on their own as individuals. Mime out their favorite movies, TV shows, books etc. When you guess it right you get points for your team and then its your turn to act it out! You can have prepared movies/TV shows/etc and let the kids draw out objects from a hat, or you can allow the kids to come up with them on the spot. Either way its a great game to play and is guaranteed fun.

Disco: This one is pretty self explanatory - crank up the tunes and get dancing! You could make this extra fun by adding a dance off and some disco balls/ funky lighting.. This one is especially good for the older kids.

Karaoke: Another one of my personal favorite games is of course karaoke. Take out a karaoke machine, playstation/wii/xbox game or just turn on some music and sing to your hearts content. You could also make this into a contest like The X-Factor or American Idol by getting judges and have your friends compete for some small prizes. Again, I think this is guaranteed fun for all involved, and for those who don't like to sing, they can be judges and release their inner Simon Cowell.

Blindfolded Make-Overs: My friends and I used to do this all the time when we were younger. If you don't mind the kids playing with make-up, and possibly destroy some of it, this is one game that they will definitely enjoy. You could buy some cheap drugstore make-up. The rules are simple; lay out the make-up and blindfold one person. This person blindfolded has to do the make-up of another person in 60 seconds. Then, the person who's make-up was done, does this to the next person and so on until everyone has their make-up done. Then once everyone has their make-up done get some mirrors and laugh away at how ridiculous you look. You could then have a runway show, showing off your make-up and vote on who's looks the best/funniest/etc.

Mocktails: Buy some plastic wine/champagne/cocktail glasses from a party shop and supply juices, ice, fruit and let the kids make their own "mocktails". This is a super easy fun game with really yummy results. This is especially good for older kids who like to be 'grown up'.

What's in that Bag?: This game requires a bit of forward planning. Basically, you sit the kids in a circle and have 10 or so "mystery" foods in black containers/ bags. You pass the container around the circle and everyone can touch, smell or taste the food (only one) without looking into the bag, blindfolds may be required. After the kids examine the food they write down what they think are in the bags/ containers, and the person with the most correct at the end wins! *You will have to check with parents to see if any of the children have any food related allergies*

Treasure Hunt: This game again requires some forward planning. Come up with a set of clues or hints and print them off in various orders (so the kids don't start off in the same place). Pair the kids off and give them a list of clues each. All of the clues will direct them to the clue that will have an answer they need to fill out on the sheet which will lead them to the next clue. The first pair finished wins! This game is a lot of work trying to come up with interesting hiding spots and clues, but is a lot of fun to play and watch as the kids frantically search to win.

The Chocolate Game: Sit the kids in a circle and give them a dice. You can use small die that you'd find in a board game, or you can DIY your own out of cardboard boxes, making large dice, which can add a sense of fun. In the centre of the circle is a plate with a big chocolate bar, a knife, a fork, a scarf, a hat and a pair of gloves. Starting with the birthday boy/ girl each child rolls the dice until one of them rolls a 6. At this point the child who rolled the 6 enters the centre of the circle and have to put on the hat, scarf and gloves and eat the chocolate with the knife and fork (no hands allowed, and you're only allowed one square in your mouth at once. After each square you have to show an empty mouth to the adjudicator) This kid keeps eating until someone else rolls a 6 and replaces them. The person who eats the last square of chocolate wins. This game requires either a lot of small chocolate bars, or a really big one, otherwise the game is too short.

Dress-up Relay Race: Divide the kids into 2 - 4 teams and each team picks a person to be their "Mannequin". Then place a box of clothing (tshirt, trousers, shoes, scarf, hat etc.) at the far end of the room/ garden, with a series of obstacles in the way. On the count of three the kids race one at a time per team (relay style!) to the opposite end of the room/garden where they have to collect an item of clothing from the box, run back through the obstacles and dress the mannequin in that item of clothing and return to the team. Only when the item of clothing is on fully can the next person on the team go. The team that dresses their mannequin first is the winner!

Wink Murder: This is a game for slightly older kids. Get the kids to sit in a circle and have them pick one child to play the "detective" in the game, and they then must leave the room for a minute. Then, pick another kid to be the "wink murderer". When this person is selected everyone has to walk around the room in random directions and the detective is invited back inside, but no one is allowed to tell this detective who the wink murderer is. All the kids have to walk around the room while the wink murderer slyly walks around winking at people. (Once the wink murderer winks at you, you have to count to 5 then fall on the floor 'dead') The aim of the game is for the detective to find the wink murderer before he/she kills everyone! This can be played multiple times in a row.

Truth or Dare: This is another classic yet very fun game. Everyone sits in a circle and in turn pick Truth or Dare. The group then picks a question or dare accordingly and the person has to do the dare or tell the truth. This is a very fun game, but may require adult supervision, as kids can be crazy.

Twister: Twister was my favorite board-type games so get a twister spinner and mat and start playing! You are out of the game if you fall or touch the ground, so its last man standing! Another twist on this game is to put a blob of paint of the correct colour on each spot on the mat for a messy, slippy, funnier version of the classic game.

Mini Olympics: As the Olympics are just over it might be a fun idea to have a mini Olympics of your own. Everyone has to compete in sports like hula hooping, running, soccer, skipping etc. and you can award medals like gold, bronze and silver. You can buy cheap medals in a pound/euro/dollar store.

The Mole: One playing card is dealt to each person (making sure one of the cards is the Ace of Spades). The person who gets this card is called "The Mole". The group of people playing should then be divided into two teams. Through the rest of the party all games played should be team games, and should use the teams chosen. The job of the mole is to make sure his/her team loses. They should, however, try to avoid suspicion, as every 10 minutes all players will get a chance to guess who the mole is. If many games are going to be played, then the best way to keep track of the mole's evil doings is to keep a tally of how many games are won by each team. If only one game is to be played, then simply keep track of the cumulative scores. Every ten minutes (you could extend this time if you want), each player should find a place to be alone, preferably in separate rooms with doors. Then, all players should go in order and announce if they'd like to make a guess as to the mole's identity. If they do, then they go to where their guess is hiding, without letting anyone else see who they walk to, and ask if they're the mole. If they are not, the player asking is out, if they are, the game is over and the player asking wins.

Blind Man's Bluff: Blindfold one kid and spin them around for 20 seconds to disorientate them! Then they have to walk around the room, arms outstretched, and try to catch another kid. If you get caught you are now blindfolded! Try to avoid running because that could lead to injury and make sure to child proof the area!

Musical Bumps: This is kind of a more fun way of playing musical chairs or statues, but they are also fun games. Basically, while the music is played everyone dances but once its stopped everyone has to quickly sit down on the ground on their bums. The last person to sit, is out, and so on until there is only one kid left. They are the winner!

Who's your Mummy?: This game requires a few rolls of toilet paper. Divide the group of kids into teams giving each team the same amount of toilet paper. Each team then has to pick someone to be their 'mummy'. Then, with 40 seconds on the clock the kids have to unravel as much toilet paper as they can onto their mummy, trying to make them look like and Egyptian mummy. At the end of the 40 seconds the mummies have to walk the catwalk and the kids, or adults get to vote on who they think is the best Mummy.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey: Once again this is a classic game that everyone knows, which can be easily spiced up. Print out a picture, for example Harry Styles from One Direction and mount the image on some cardboard. Then print out some facial features/ accessories such as glasses, moustache, beard, earrings etc and cut them out and put adhesive (blu tack/ sticky tape) on the backs of them. Have the kids line up and then one at a time blindfold them, spin them for 10 seconds and have them place a facial feature on the printed out picture. The most accurate kids win.

*You can use any item/ celeb/ animal etc - Harry Styles just popped into my mind*

I have included a lot of games here so be sure to write in the comments what your favorite one is from this list and one that you play that is not on this list! Have fun! xx

NB: I also have a hub for Halloween Party Games for Kids so have a look !
