Hey, guys! I'm Laura! I have a ton of different interests and passions and love sharing them with others! Enjoy, and thanks for reading!
Cornhole. The word makes me think of Beavis and Butthead, but really, it’s a fun game to play! If you’re not familiar with this name for the game, you are surely familiar with another name as it also goes by the name of Bean Bag Toss, Dummy Boards, Hillbilly Horseshoes, Baggo, Corn Toss, and many other different names. At this point, you probably know just what game I’m referring to, right?
It’s quite a popular outdoor game to play in America because it’s fun! It makes for a great social yet competitive activity for any backyard barbecue, family reunion, or whatever the reason for the outdoor shindig!
How to Play Cornhole
Setting up the Game
The game is simple, and the rules are few. Let’s begin with the setup:
- Place goals 27 feet apart, ensuring 27 feet between the fronts of both goals. The goals should be positioned in such a way that the higher end with the hole is farthest at both ends, facing players like a ramp. A flat surface is a must.
- Choose teams (if not playing one-on-one). You can have up to two players per team for a maximum of four players per game. If you have two-person teams, one player from each team will be on both sides, or if you’re playing one-on-one, you’ll both be throwing from the same side. i.e., You’ll be standing at a goal with an opponent no matter what.
- Set all eight bean bags at one goal, four of each color.
Tossing Bean Bags
- Flip a coin to determine who goes first. Or Rock paper scissors, or however you typically make choices with your buddies.
- The player that won the coin toss goes first, throwing one bean bag taking care not to step past the front of the goal (foul), then the opposing player throws a bean bag. This continues until each player has thrown all four bags.
Keeping Score
- You get 3 points for each bean bag sunk into the hole and 1 point for each bean bag that sticks on the board. Points can be gained if you or another player knocks your bag into the hole, and lost if you or another player cause your bag to fall off the board.
- Scoring is calculated for that round, then players either proceed to the other side to toss again, or the teammates take over from the other end, taking turns tossing the bags. The team that won the previous round of tosses would go first.
- Points are awarded based on cancellation scoring, which means that if you scored 9 points in the round and your opponent only scored 4, you are awarded the difference, which would be 5 points in this case.
- 21 points is the goal, do not go over. Some variations call for setting the score back to 11 if you go over, other variations stipulate an automatic loss and end of the game. Always set specific rules beforehand.
Fouls should be watched for, and consist of stepping past the foul line (front of the goal) when tossing, taking too long to throw (20 seconds is standard), or improper tossing (not throwing underhand or tossing your bean bags out of turn). Any points that would have been scored in the event of a foul are null.
Tournament Play
Tournament play is very similar in rules and will have people watching more closely for fouls. Although a tournament typically consists of one-on-one games, it can be played with teams as well. Standard brackets are used to determine who goes to which game next, and the amount of brackets, of course, depends on the number of people competing in the tournament. If there are many participants, having teams is a way to speed up the tournament.
Speaking of cornhole tournaments, if you plan on entering one as a team, you should probably have some kind of awesome cornhole team name! So grab some beers, gather your team, and put your heads together to think of the very best cornhole team names! Oh, and toss a few rounds while you’re at it, it does wonders for inspiration!
